Slowing yourself down, sets the stage for learning to happen! Slowing down grabs your child's brains attention AND creates the space for their brain to try new movements.... You can slow down in 3 ways... 1. Slow down your own physical actions (diapering, getting your child dressed, feeding, hugging, etc) 2. Slow down your communication. (when asking a question or giving a direction to your child, count silently to 10 and wait for a response) 3. Slow down your emotional response. (We all have triggers! What are yours? Can you slow down and respond in a different way?) How will you slow down your next interaction with your child? Picking up your child (the Anat Baniel Method way) Part 1 Sitting up straight through the midline takes a LOT of muscular effort. Rolling through the side (and using their body weights effortlessly through gravity) is the natural way neurotypical babies figure out how to transition from lying to sitting.... Some of our kids with special needs just aren't able to explore these transitional movements on their own, and have missing "gaps" in their experience. By slowing down and exploring different ways to pick up your child, you can start filling in those gaps through quality movements. You can help your child with special needs to explore rolling through their sides, to come into sitting. Go slow. Put one arm under their head for support and safety. One hand on their pelvis to help gently roll through their side. Stay tuned for Part 2 Join my FB group for more gentle movements you can explore with your child: https://www.facebook.com/groups/mindfullmovesparents/

What position do you use your phone in? I was feeling a bit rounded inwards this week, and this simple movement has brought some much-needed releif! Give it a try!... 1. Sit or stand comfortably. Notice where your shoulders hang in this moment. 2. arms at shoulder height... rotate palms up, then palms down. Go slow. Explore what feels good. 3. look to the right as you reach to the right, look to the left as you reach to the left. 4. Mix and match rotating one palm up, the other palm down as you look and reach. Have a bit of fun. See how many different combos you can explore. 5. Simply rotate palms up and down. Has anything changed? 6. Let it all go, arms resting. Notice where your shoulders hang now. What feels different? If you do notice a difference, let us know below and... Congrats! You just experienced Brain Plasticity! All brains can change through slow, gentle, fun movements. Keep exploring movement! xo Jen Join us for 5 Days to Access your Child's Brain through slow, gentle movements: https://classes.mindfullmoves.com/pl/149304

Are you doing things TO your child... or doing things WITH your child? By simply SLOWING down, you can create moments of connection. These moments of connection are when your child's brain is in LEARNING mode.... Slowing down allows the brain to try new things. New ways to move, new ways to explore. Can you see the moment in the clip where things changed from DOING something to the baby... to connecting WITH the baby? It's sooo simple, but these tiny moments throughout the day can create a HUGE impact for your child. All those tiny explorations give your child's brain a fuller and fuller picture of themselves and how they can move their bodies through gravity. Try slowing down today! Pick just one daily activity you do with your child, (as simple as picking them up, getting dressed, brushing their teeth) and slow it waaaaaay down. Notice if your child is more engaged with you? Notice if slowing down allows you to explore the activity in a new way? Does this sitting position look familiar? Do any of your kids sit like this? Maybe it even feels familiar? Do you sit like this? Pelvis rolled back, tailbone tucked under.... Get curious about how far (and in what direction) you can reach in this position. Feel what parts of you move as you reach. Roll your pelvis forward. Imagine it able to roll like a ball in all directions. Get curious about how far (and in what direction) you can reach as your pelvis rolls with the movement. Did you notice a difference? More freedom of movement in the pelvis equals more freedom of movement in almost ALL of our movements. Rolling over VS falling over There are efficient, well-organized ways to roll over, and not-so-efficient ways to roll over. Can your brain figure out how to roll over just a little more easily? ... A little more gently? With a little more coordination? Any well-organized movement is reversible. Can you stop, pause, reverse direction when you roll around? Hint: figuring out how to roll efficiently (or well-organized) has VERY little to do with core or muscle strength and EVERYTHING to do with how your BRAIN is able to coordinate all the pieces of your complex and unique body. If you’d like to explore your child’s unique path to efficient, well-organized rolling then come join us! 2 ways your child might explore rolling Both ways can only happen if their pelvis has the freedom to roll up AND down. If their pelvis can roll up (tailbone tucking under) then it’s easy to roll into a ball.... And maybe even roll right into sitting! Fun! If their pelvis can roll down (tailbone sticking out) then it’s easy to roll onto the tummy. So fun for reaching toys and prepping for army crawling! Less freedom of movement in the pelvis = less freedom in milestones. More freedom in the pelvis = more freedom in milestones. Join us in exploring movement from home.
