As a doula a get the nesty feelings too. Whenever I get struck by sudden thoughts of I need to make waffles I know somebody is going to be embarking on their birthing journey very soon. It’s that kind of nesty day today,

Exciting new teaching tools have arrived.

Withessing the transformation of families is endlessly fulfilling work. Choosing a favourite part would be impossible. Teaching babywearing to newborn parents is way up there on the awesomely fulfilling scale. #uppymama #babywearing #newborn #doula

When it comes up, most people assume that I wouldn’t hire a doula, being one myself. . The opposite is true. .... I have hired support for each birth, not because I *needed* anybody present in order to feel prepared (in fact, my second birth was SO fast, my doula got rerouted a bunch + missed the birth, and the midwife made it as she was being born). Rather, I chose to invite someone whom I felt intrinsically connected to, to support us as I led my own birth. I chose someone who I knew saw me as the rockstar that I am, someone who not only trusted birth but also believed just as much as I do in my own intuition. And what I gained in that was freedom, uninhibited confidence in myself, and well...this. The pictures that I have from River’s birth (all 3 of my births, for that matter) mean the absolute world to me. My beloved doula, Becky, sent me this the other day. Aslan was by my side for all 3 births (technically just for the labour of Summer’s, as I had my first babe in hospital). To have this picture to match the imprint Azzy left on my heart is something that I will cherish forever. . This is what having a doula is for me; someone to hold the edges of the space that I unabashedly take up, while capturing the nuances that string together the bigger moments. Having someone trusted to be present as witness to our birthing day truly is an investment I will never regret. I am called to document the stories of people who do great things and are raising the consciousness of humanity. Every time I travel to be with these women, I feel the importance of this telling of stories. These women gather, tend, nurture and honour the life-givers. As I stand before them, my camera in hand, I always have this quote in my mind. "At the present time, the dysfunction of the old consciousness and the arising of the new are both acceleratings. Paradoxically,... things are getting worse and better at the same time, although the worse is more apparent because it makes so much noise.~Eckhart Tolle These retreats and this work are a quiet arising of the new consciousness. I feel better about the state of everything when I leave their circles. I leave these women with my heart full of hope and my camera full of transformational stories. When I photograph the journeys that the women go through at the Sacred Pregnancy Calgary retreats with @seedholistic , I am reminded how strongly I feel that there is an historic and sacred value in the layers of the stories of parents growing and birthing their babies, of children seeing their own stories and of the documentation of this. That it is worth honouring and that sacred experiences of birth are not only possible but being claimed by families in the here and now. ...I am staggered by the honour of being trusted to document and share these stories.
