Essential oils to help you sleep As you probably already know, there are several essential oils that can help you get a good night’s sleep, and there are lots of easy ways to use them. Choose the method that suits you best, but be sure to try them all in case one way works better than another for you. Bergamot, chamomile roman, clary sage, geranium, jasmine, sweet marjoram, nroli, sandalwood, ylang ylang and of course, lavender, are all essential oils that can help you to d...rift into a peaceful and refreshing night’s sleep. One of the best and easiest ways to use these essential oils is in a warm bath just before you go to bed. Run a nice warm bath and add just 6 to 8 drops in total of your chosen essential oils to the bath water, and then agitate the water well or use a Bath Dispersant to disperse the oils evenly. To supercharge your treatment add some essential oils to an aromatherapy diffuser in your bedroom after getting out of the bath. By the time you have dried yourself off and you’re ready to slip between the sheets, the relaxing aroma of the essential oils will have filled your bedroom. Practice the deep-breathing exercise above and together with the oils it will help you drift into a peaceful, pandemic-free slumber. Alternatively, mix your chosen essential oils in a carrier oil and ask your partner to give you a mini-massage just before retiring to bed. The relaxing action of massage together with the essential oils encourages your body to relax, and slows down your heart rate, making it easier for you to drift into a deep, relaxing sleep. If your symptoms of insomnia persist you must consult with your doctor as soon as possible to determine the exact cause of your problem

MINDFULNESS? MEDITATION? It seems like every corner of the Internet is shouting the praises of mindfulness and meditation. Whether it’s celebrities swearing by Transcendental meditation or motivational speakers encouraging mindfulness practices, these two ideas are entering the mainstream like never before! But what’s the difference between mindfulness and meditation?... Maybe you’ve seen people using these words interchangeably. Or maybe you’ve seen articles or books about mindful meditation, which makes it even more confusing when trying to separate out which is which! Mindfulness Think of this as bringing awareness to the present moment. That might mean focusing on a specific part of your body, like the soles of your feet or the tips of your fingers. It might mean focusing on your breath: concentrating on the inhale for three counts, then focusing on the exhale for three counts. Maybe it’s being aware of sensations in your body. Think of how often we sit at a desk, staring at our computers, holding tension in our neck and shoulders! Notice all of the physical sensations your body is experiencing. The other component of mindfulness is non-judgment. It means being aware of what’s going on in the present moment and viewing it through a lens of acceptance and non-judgement. It’s bigger than those minutes you spend meditating in the morning. Mindfulness is a way of being in the world. It’s not limited to a morning or evening session, but instead happens throughout the day. Think big-picture stuff. Turn your attention to what’s going on in the present moment right now as you’re reading this. Your surroundings, physical sensations, any emotions you might be feeling. Don’t judge them, simply observe. Meditation While mindfulness can be practiced while doing other activities (eating, walking, etc.), meditation is typically practiced on its own. There are many, many varieties of meditation, and some of them are familiar even to people who don’t meditate. Transcendental meditation, for example, is a specific practice of mantra meditation that is learned from a trained TM instructor. The specifics of meditation vary from practice to practice, so it’s difficult to generalize, but basically meditation is a technique to transform the mind. To quiet it, or at least attempt to. To get in touch with your mind and patterns of thinking. There are meditation apps that provide guided meditations. You may have done a guided meditation to help you sleep, or maybe you’ve taken a class and meditated with a teacher. The act of sitting in stillness is usually what people think of when they picture meditation. Mindfulness and meditation can reduce stress and anxiety, deepen intuition, and sharpen the mind-body connection. No matter which option you choose, it’s a great practice to add to your daily routine!

MINDFULNESS Paying attention to something, in a particular way.... on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally. (Kabat-Zinn 2003) A Task on Mindfulness for my awesome clients, cos I Miss You So! Will I test you on this when I see you again? Perhaps ! Notice, Accept, Dismiss, Return, Repeat Use this to remind you of the basic process of mindfulness. Choose something to focus on. This could be your breath, your surroundings, a mantra, a sound, a physical sensation, a concept or a task. This will be your ‘Target of attention’. Focus your attention on your chosen target. Every time you notice that your mind has wandered, use the following process to NOTICE the thought, ACCEPT it without judgment, DISMISS the thought without engaging in it, and RETURN your attention back to your chosen target of attention. Notice, Accept, Dismiss, Return and repeat. Repeat this process throughout your mindfulness practice. NOTICE ACCEPT DISMISS RETURN REPEAT Another easy way to remember this process is with the acronym SOLAR: Stop, Observe the thought without judgement. Let the thought go without engaging in it. And Return to your chosen target. Stop Observe Let it go And Return
