We often talk about the Mind-Set that many workouts require and sometimes you will hear me talk about working through the "Pain Cave". This is the ability to push yourself to the wall and when your head is screaming STOP you have the confidence and determination to dig deep and keep going. If you every want to see an example of this just peak over at Stephen in any workout with burpees. Today we had a workout that called for high volume of burpees over the bar. This is a m...ovement that manages to quickly put Stephen in the position where everything is screaming to stop. About halfway into his first of two rounds of 40 burpees I told Stephen, already knowing what his answer would be, that he had the option of going to the 30 minute mark in the workout or finishing no matter how long it took. Stephen didn't let me down and decided to finish. After 41 minutes he finished his last rep of this 300 rep workout. This was about 10 minutes off the pace of some of the others, but he was the only one to complete the workout RX and so was sitting at the top of the leader board when I left the gym this morning. Stephen hates to get time capped and not finish a workout. No matter how deep into the pain cave he goes he has the mind-set and determination to finish strong. He gives everything he has in every workout and because of this he has made massive improvements in just a few months. He is looking better and he has told me a number of times that he feels so much better since he started. His consistency and determination can be seen every day and his eagerness to improve each day makes him a breeze to coach. A devoted father and soon-to-be husband, James has established himself as a vital member of the Mind-Set community. Prior to obtain...ing his CrossFit level one certification, James spent over ten years as a Community Health Worker, trainer and workshop facilitator. His ability to engage and adapt to the needs of community members is evident in his coaching style. James’ vision of health is one of a holistic wellness as he understands the connection between mind, body and spirit. He views an athlete’s character as more important than their talent. His goal is to assist others in maximizing their abilities by helping them feel comfort in the uncomfortable and building mental toughness, discipline and a strong work ethic. Workout Tip of the Week ~ Coach Chris @aweelittlething Pay attention to your warm up. So many athletes will say, I ran here, I’m warmed up. No, you’re not. Or they go through the same warm up routine for every work out, regardless of the workout’s objectives. This is a time to reinforce good technique, assess the degree of muscle soreness you have from earlier in the week and explore range of motion limitations so there are no surprises once the WOD starts. Our best athletes use this time wisely with a general warmup followed by dynamic movements specifically chosen for the day’s work. Focus! Workout Tip of the Week ~ Want to be a fire breather? Well you better learn how to breath first. Proper breathing during a HIIT workout can be the difference between going one more round and asking the room to stop spinning, while you lay in the fetal position questioning life. Tips:... Don’t hold your breath, as this can kill you and you can’t be a fire breather if you are not breathing because you are dead. Don’t be the creepy shallow mouth breather. Leave that to us coaches while we standing around and torture you like a happy serial killer. This type of breathing will cause you to let out to much carbon dioxide and constrict your blood vessels, which means less oxygen getting in to be used in creating more energy. Do inhale through the nose and exhale from the mouth. This will help build a pattern of breathing in and out, which helps stop you from holding your breath and thus not killing you. Do use the rhythm method. I know, I know your entire life you were warned against it, but here it will actually work. Find a rhythm for each workout or with each movemenet. When doing aerobic work, establish a rhythm that flows with the movement. Like exhale in the drive of the row and inhale in the recovery. When doing anaerobic work, you will want to exhale with the explosive component of the movement. Do breath deeply, with the inhale through the nose being longer than the exhale from the mouth. Do practice your nose breathing during warm ups and build on being able to do this more and more. This is a skill and like any other skill it will require practice. So to breath fire you need to breath deeply, inhale through the nose and find rhythm. Coach Ian @dunkn_021

Workout Tip of the Week - Coach @ryanharman5 Strength Training and Cardio Most coaches say that cardio interferes with an athletes strength or hypertrophy gains. Research agrees that concurrent training leads to less than optimal results when compared to strength training exclusively. The majority of this research swings too far one way or the other. Should you run 15k and then the next day try for a 1RM Back Squat? Probably not!... Cardio can help strength training by: Improving mitochondrial health Better recovery between training sessions Less likely to get injured Better temperature control Better waste removal Better shuttling of nutrients to muscles. Make sure you have a properly designed program that allows you to strength train, cardio and provides enough rest. This workout was one of Mike's favorites and he'd named it "Body Armor". From here on it will be referred to as "Murph" in honor of the focused warrior who wanted nothing more in life than to serve this great country and the beautiful people who make it what it is. Let’s all come together to honour all the men and women that sacrifice for us everyday. FREE. Come work hard, for a brief moment put yourself in their shoes. Mobility is the ability to effectively and safely perform the universal human movements, such as squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling, crawling, and rolling, that are required for functional living. Many think that mobility means flexibility, but flexibility is only one component of mobility. Being able to move a joint through its full range of motion requires flexibility; being able to comfortably sit back into a correct squat requires both flexibility and a degree of neuromuscular control. Athlete of the week ~ Larry Man from our CrossFit WE Class A true inspiration in the gym, Larry shows up consistently and works as hard as possible every class. He is easy to coach and loves to get better with each movement. I often forget that he is almost 65 years young. He lifts and pushes just as hard as members 20-30 years his junior. Workout Tip of the Week ~ Coach Chris @aweelittlething Let’s talk sleep routine. Irregular sleep patterns will wreak havoc on hormones and make your goals harder to achieve. Sleep in a blacked out room. Get enough sleep. Go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday. This stacks the deck in you favor and tells your coach you’re serious about doing the work outside of the gym that needs to be done to make your goals happen.
