Joan Kuyek's work, and her experiences in Sudbury, have far-reaching impacts for how we understand place, health, and community in areas dominated by mining. Looking forward to reading her book and hopefully speaking to her at some point about it.
Thanks for nothing Environment Canada. I wrote about this leak and the ways stories I’ve been hearing, as part of a SSHRC funded project I’m working on, intersected with this investigation in 2015. Since then, through archival research, I’ve unearthed a very clear picture of collusion between various government agencies, like this one, and INCO, now Vale, throughout the twentieth century. To say this is surprising would be a lie. But I am disappointed to see that the collusion continues. Citizens’ health is at stake, especially in the city’s west end: http://activehistory.ca//what-about-the-people-place-memo/. It’s time to stop celebrating the company’s successful regreening program and start asking tough questions about the toxicity that lies beneath.
9.7 million trees is a huge accomplishment. That said, we also need to be mindful of the toxicity we can’t see and the long-term effects mining has had on health in the region.
A disaster all round: https://thenarwhal.ca/this-is-giant-mine/
Big changes on the horizon for Vale's Superstack. These new 450 foot stacks will soon be visible and will use far less energy while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by about 40%.
