The stress test was put in place by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) to ensure that Canadian borrowers could afford a spike in interest rates should that occur. It is aimed to reduce default on mortgage loans. The minimum qualifying rate is currently set at 5.25%; which typically means you are qualifying at a higher interest rate than what you can expect to see on your mortgage contract (loan). The program offers 5 or 10% of the home’s purchase price to put toward a down payment. This addition to your down payment lowers your mortgage carrying costs, making homeownership more affordable. The program has recently expanded!
