I made this pendant to mark this strange time in history and the notion of what it means to stay home. For me, being home has been a whirling mix of things - gratitude for the people I share my life with and the beautiful piece of land that we inhabit, worry over a very uncertain future as as self-employed artist, shame that my chosen path in life isnt in the essential services sectors as well as comfort and pride in our (mostly) communal efforts to protect each other by sta...ying home. There has also been a lot of reflection on what my Mom used to call being plain. When I was a kid and had an itch to go somewhere or do something, but my Mom felt like our family just needed a day at home, she would tell me that we were just going to stay home and be plain. The same, but different. I dont use any casting or laser cutting or 3D printing in my work. I work with sheet and wire and hand tools and I make my pieces one at a time. So, even though I create multiples of my designs, no two pieces are exactly the same. Take these two crescent moon pendants for example - the sliver on one is slightly skinnier, the placement of the sliver on the other is slightly lower and the dark patina is quite different on each piece. Making jewellery this way keeps me engaged, not only with the results but also with the process... Hello 2020! Last year was a big year for me, particularly the second half. I co-created a sweet little local craft show called @noel_north_muskoka with two lovely women ( @krystalspeck and @lovenorthmedicinals ) and I embarked upon an exciting new adventure by opening @brittongallery.ca with my Dad. January is often a month of burnout for me, but now that the gallery is open, Im feeling really excited about diving into all the nitty gritty work of running a gallery.
