Completed my first workout in a mask yesterday. Not that big a deal. There is a lot of talk in the fitness industry about creating healthy habits or making lifestyle changes, but no one is teaching you how to do that. I wanted to give you a simple 5 second brain hack right from psychology that can help you create and reinforce those healthy habits everyone is talking about. You have probably heard that it takes 3 weeks to create a new habit, but what do you do during those 3 weeks to make sure those new habits stick around? Specially in an ag...e of distraction and shortening attention spans. Here’s what you’re going to do. The moment you get the urge to do something healthy (exercise, floss your teeth, eat health, stretch, -- this also works for daily chores like mowing the lawn or doing the dishes) take a deep breath, slowly exhale for 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and then go do it! If you don’t get yourself started, you’re going to end up in the same pattern you’re currently in. You need to move to action. The reason this works is because your brain is hardwired for threat avoidance. Your body is conditioned to remain safe and in control. That is called your comfort zone. We are all familiar with it and when when we try to develop new habits your body will resist unless there is significant input to force a change (think fight or flight). However, if you act before contemplation you can short circuit that process. This 5 Second Rule was developed by Mel Robbins. A few pictures from yesterday’s workout. This was a phase 2 week 2 athlete program I built to maximize strength and conditioning. My heart rate was around 140 for the duration of the workout with rest periods every 10 minutes where my heart rate would fall to 105 in 2 minutes. This was designed to mimic the demands of BJJ tournaments. Maximum strength output over 10 minute intervals with 2 minutes of rest. The exercise shown were not in the same interval.
The Covid-19 pandemic has had a major impact on personal trainers and the fitness industry as a whole. This article goes into the impacts on trainers but one of the big takeaways for me was that 97 percent of personal trainers plan to continue training clients after pandemic restrictions end, with most of them using some combination of in-person and online coaching. That also means that the majority of clients have become a custom to, are open to or have requested to train... remotely. Many of the trainers I’ve talked to have seen 50% or less return to in-person training. What would make this a great week for you? This is a question I ask myself every Monday morning. I’ll take 2-5 minutes thinking about where I want to be by the end of the week. Maybe it’s my career, finance, health and fitness or personal development but I’ll reflect on what I want this week and hash out the components of what it will take to get there. The caveat is that you have to master your practice. You need to be able to move from theory to practice without judging yourself.
