The Self Advocates Leadership Network (SALN) would like to share the public release of their report on Thinking about Language. Words Matter. Words have Power. The Self Advocate Leadership Network’s Journey Through Thinking About Language (August 2020). What is the report about you ask? For years people with disabilities have not had much control over the way society refers to them. There has been a never ending struggle for people to be heard and listened to. SALN belie...ves it is time to have a serious conversation and support ways to help people think differently. For the full report, check out: https://salnbc.com/saln-projects/ Here are a couple of ideas from SALN to keep in mind when thinking about the right language to use: 1. Ask people what they prefer 2. Try to use the persons name as much as possible. 3. Ask yourself, are the words you use positive, respectful, meaningful and helpful?

There will be days when everything is going the way you had planned, and days when you feel like you just can’t do anything right. Choose to embrace both kind of days as they are all lessons. If we are thankful for the lessons we learn on the days we fall down, and grateful for the people who love and support us, the goodness in life will grow. For those of you who are parents and/or caregivers, check out FSI’s (Family Support Institute) upcoming Learning Exploration Event Finding Balance while Being a Caregiver, on Tuesday, November 17th 6:30-8:30pm via zoom. What is a core bubble? A core bubble are the people you spend the most time with and are physically close to. For some people, their core bubble is their immediate household. For others, their core bubble may contain a partner, relative, friend or co-parent who lives in a different household. An immediate household is: - your immediate family - a group of people who live in the same dwelling (for example if you live with roommates) The pandemic has given us so much to think about with new terms like bubble, medical masks, safe six and of course social distancing. Just remember that we are all in this together, and hopefully by following the recommendations of the PHO (Provincial Health Office), we will keep each other safe.
