As helpers, we often feel the need to see our impact in tangible, measurable ways. We allow negative language into our head about the broken system; we look through a lens of it doesn’t matter, I can’t make a difference. These ideas are surely contributing to our burnout. Veterans diagnosed with chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often experience difficulties in their personal lives and relationships. When a loved one is struggling with a physical or mental disability, the caregiver can be left feeling completely overwhelmed and emotionally exhausted. If you are a caregiver to a veteran, an aging parent, or a disabled family member, then likely you don't have much time or energy left for yourself at the end of the day. This is espe...cially true if you are also holding a job and trying to balance work-life demands. Caregivers usually do not have enough time to unwind, relax, and get enough restorative sleep. This can lead to anxiety, depression, and insomnia as their "emotional cup" empties. When do you have time for yourself? How are you attending to your mental and physical health? It may be time to reach out for help from friends and loved ones, and seek support and new coping strategies from a professional.

Viktor Frankl was a leading psychologist and neurologist in Austria in the 1930’s, who dedicated his life to helping others find meaning in their lives. He specifically focused on patients with depression and suicidal thoughts and is credited for treating (and preventing suicide in) 12,000 women in just a few years. In 1942, Frankl was stripped of his practice and sent to a concentration camp because of his Jewish heritage. He was the only member of his family to survive the camps. He rebuilt his life and his practice after coming to terms with the horrors he had faced. He created a type of psychotherapy Logotherapy which focused on the will to live and finding the meaning of one’s life. . . .
