We can't plan for every scenario, but these are some good things to talk about.

ITS BACK! Nitrous oxide Laughing has Entanox Gas and air... whatever you call it: it has been returned to the labour and delivery floors of all Fraser Health hospitals including CGH and ARH! . After a thorough review of the evidence there is no reason to suspect that Entanox use is a risk for spreading covid through aerosolizing the virus. This takes a high pressure system where as entanox needs to be inhaled- it is not forced into your lungs. In short, we are SO EXCITED to offer this very safe and very effective form of pain control to our patients! . There are points during labour when you feel you don’t know how you could possibly make it through one more contraction, but then you do. I’ve learned a lot from childbirth, particularly that breathing through the pain actually does help (and much to my children’a dismay I’m always telling them to just breathe ). When I used to run competitively (yeah, can you believe it?? ) my coach would give us little phrases like I like hills, they get me to the top or there is no pain at the top of the podium and while I may have rolled my eyes at the time, it’s amazing how focussing on something other than your pain actually helps too! How did you mentally or physically get through that next contraction? And what would you recommend to someone who is preparing for labour? @laurenanddouglas.birth . #birth #labouranddelivery #midwife #midwiferycare #painmanagement #entanox #gasandair #nitrousoxide #baby #registeredmidwives #fraserhealthauthority

We spend a lot of time preparing for labour and birth itself but do you know what happens right after you give birth? . your baby will come directly to your ...chest for immediate skin to skin contact. We’ll make sure you both have warm blankets and a nurse or second midwife will have a listen to your babies heart and lungs. . We delay cord clamping routinely. Meaning we leave the cord intact between baby and placenta until it has stopped pulsating (returning baby’s blood to baby) or the placenta is ready to come. Occasionally we deliver the placenta with the cord still intact. We clamp the cord, you cut! . the placenta comes with some help from us, a push or two from you and some patience. You’re not pregnant anymore! . we take your blood pressure, pulse, check your bleeding, and the tone (firmness) and location of your fundus (top of your uterus) every 15min in the first hour after you have a baby. . We check your perineum/vagina for tears. We add local freezing before we start to repair anything. When we’re done we may offer you a suppository for pain relief. Ice and tea pads can also be a great relief. . If you’re choosing to breastfeed your baby will likely start exhibiting these cues in the first hour of skin to skin. We’ll help you latch babe and feed! . Eat and drink! Those first bites and sips of food are amazing (even if they’re just toast). . After an hour or more with a chance to rest, feed and meet your newborn we often suggest a shower (it feels amazing). We would also like you to pee (decreases bleeding). We’ll teach you how to use a peri bottle and help you with the giant mesh undies. At this time baby is often with your partner doing more skin to skin . . These are the things that happen routinely within the first hour or so after giving birth! Talk to your health care provider if you have questions. . #birth #hospitalbirth #homebirth #midwives #baby #labour #pospartum #vernix #breastfeeding #nursing #newborn #skintoskin #skintoskincontact #bonding #mother #momlife #birthphotography #firstlatch #registeredmidwives #knowledgeispower #informedchoice #babygirl #babyboy #takebackpostpartum See more
