HOW WE CAN FIX YOUR FAILING WINDOW PAINT: Peeling paint on window frames is one of the most common problems we see in the painting industry. To deliver a quality service, we need to know the root cause of the problem as well as the solution. The two main causes of failing paint on window frames are a high presence of moisture, which can be introduced through direct rainfall, snow and condensation, or an existing coats breakdown caused by age, harmful UV rays breaking down th...e protective resins in the paint, as well as continued abuse from the harsh Canadian climate. Once water has penetrated the painting surface through either a crack in the paint, a joint that has not been properly sealed or a gap between the siding and the window frame, the bare wood below the surface naturally absorbs it. This will then expand and contract with temperature changes, forcing the paint from the surface. SOLUTION This is where we come in: Our crew will begin by preparing all windows thoroughly, before applying any paint, to ensure that you receive a professional paintjob that is designed to last. The process will be to: 1. Scrape all loose paint from the window frames. We use long handled scrapers and plenty of elbow grease. 2. Sand the rough edges with 60 or 80 grit sandpaper in order to smooth them down as much as possible 3. Wash the window frame with light soap and water. The purpose is not to soak the frame, it is to remove any loose dirt or sand particles. This is usually done using a damp cloth and TSP. 4. Once dry, we will spot prime the bare wood. This seals the wood and provides an ideal surface for the finish coat to adhere to 5. In a deluxe quote, to avoid future moisture problems, all cracks and joints will be thoroughly caulked, and all failing putty will be removed and replaced 6. We are now ready to paint. Our finish coat will be of the highest quality paint available It will contain top quality resins and pigments, and have additives to prevent chalking, fading, mildew and fungal growth.
