This piece was originally created as a quick idea that came to my mind and as response to a book I read about exploring spaces in ethnographies in 2016. I entitled it ‘the shapes of memories’ and it privately served as a memoir of spaces where I had been sexually assaulted during my university years. According to Stats Can (2019), 1/3 women have experienced unwanted sexual behaviour in public, more than 11 million Canadians have been physically or sexually assaulted since the age of 15, and 1/5 victims of sexual assault (both men and women) felt blamed for their own victimization.
