Public Service Announcement If you’re looking to camp in Wood Buffalo National Park this summer, here’s what you need to know Yellowknife (May 20, 2021) The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) reminds Northwest Territories (NWT) residents that with camping season underway, out-of-territory travellers are permitted to travel through the NWT to camp in the Alberta portion of Wood Buffalo National Park. Shared on behalf of Minister Green: As the long weekend approaches, I would like to provide some clarification on the recommendation from the OCPHO regarding non-essential travel to and from Yellowknife, Ndilo, Dettah and Behchoko. The NJ Macpherson School outbreak/Yellowknife cluster resulted in a large number of COVID-19 infections. The situation is improving daily, and there is no evidence of community transmission. Because of the large number of cases and how close Yell...owknife was to community transmission, Office of the Chief Public Health Officer (OCPHO) feels we need to remain vigilant at this time -- people should make wise choices about travel within the territory based on whether the travel is necessary. The OCPHO discourages non-essential travel between Yellowknife, Behchoko, Dettah, Ndilo and other small NWT communities. The OCPHO encourages necessary travel between Yellowknife, Behchoko, Dettah, Ndilo and small communities, such as travel for medical appointments. The OCPHO encourages recreational travel, such as camping this long weekend as long as it does not include travel between Yellowknife, Behchoko, Dettah, Ndilo and other small NWT communities. People should continue to follow public health orders and other public health guidance. Spending time in the NWT’s outdoors is very healthy! Those who are required to isolate must continue to follow guidance received from their public health team. This will be communicated as part of the Public Health Advisory Daily Update, but please share this with your constituents.
