Last week, Paper Excellence posted on May 5th to bring awareness to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Red Dress campaign. Today we share a few members of our Paper Excellence team who were wearing red on May 5th in solidarity with #MMIWG. Left to right: Brenda Martin, Public Affairs Manager; Quinton Hayward, RPF, Chief Forester; Kim Lefebvre, Manager of Indigenous Fibre Partnerships; Lana Wilhelm, RPF, Manager of Community and Indigenous Relations; Ed Evans, Log Superintendent. The pin included in this post is from the Lil’ Red Dress Project.
Paper Excellence is committed to our journey towards reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. As one of the steps along that path, we are recognizing May 5th as a day to bring awareness to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Red Dress campaign. #MMIWG
At Meadow Lake Mechanical Pulp Inc. we’re making excellent progress on our pulp residual dryer installationthe drum arrived recently (see video). The dryer is supplied by Uzelac Industries based in Wisconsin and is being erected by High Octane Welding, a Meadow Lake contractor. Mechanical and civil engineering support is provided by March Consulting Associates Inc. based in Saskatoon. This $3.1 million investment at our Meadow Lake facility will reduce the water content in o...ur fibre residuals from 60% to 40% and allow us to incinerate it in a cleaner and more efficient manner. Fibre residuals are made up of material rejected during woodchip refining. These rejects are too coarse to include in our high-quality pulp and have a high concentration of dense stone cells. Stone cells, which are detrimental to papermaking and printing, originate from the cambium layer between the bark and the wood of a tree where they provide a physical defense against stem-boring insects. #pulpandpaper
Traditionally, public commemorative ceremonies for the Day of Mourning are held across the country. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many in-person ceremonies have been cancelled. The CCOHS (Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety) encourages organizations, communities, and individuals to simply pause at 11:00 am today for a moment of silence. These acts of remembrance help to honour the lives lost or injured due to workplace tragedy. #DayOfMourning
