A client enjoying an Epson salt bath after her Trigger Point massage to help remove any excess toxins. A trigger point is a hyper irritable focus within a taut band of skeletal muscle and/or its associated fascia. It is usually painful or tender upon compression and can evoke a characteristic twitch response, referred pain pattern and/or autonomic phenomena. A trigger point may occur in skin, fat-pads, tendons, joint capsules, ligaments and periosteum but they do not produce... referred pain patterns and are not considered myofascial. Myofascial cause a referred pain pattern. There are three types of trigger points. Active trigger points cause pain and incapacity. Latent trigger points are clinically silent (painless) and usually cause muscle weakness and/or limit range of motion. Latent trigger points are also subject to periodic acute attacks of pain. Reactivation can occur as a result of overuse, trauma, overstretch, chilling or viral infection. Both active and latent trigger points result in dysfunction. The third type, associated trigger points, can be divided into two subtypes. Satellite trigger points develop in muscles that lie within the pain referral zone of primary trigger points, while secondary trigger points develop in muscles that are synergists or antagonists of the muscle with the primary trigger point.

"Whether you ride for pleasure or performance, equine massage is a simple addition to your horses health care program which can keep you in the saddle at the top of your performance." A good read explaining how your horse can benefit from massage!
