This week all students received a wildflower planting kit in their home packages! Yesterday, if they were able to attend virtually, they planted their seeds in their classrooms and there was a ton of excitement! We wanted to send home these kits as an opportunity for students to work with the land and hopefully grow something beautiful for their homes! Hopefully within 1-2 weeks, everyone will start to see their flowers start to sprout! If you can, please post pictures of your flowers or even completing the kit at home if you haven't already! We would love to see them and we would love to see how they turn out as they continue to grow

A reminder to families that the Ministry has created a new and easy Self-Assessment Tool to help you determine if your child should be going to school. The link is updated regularly and available at https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/ . Please complete this every morning, and keep children at home if they are sick. Happy World Teachers’ Day! Today, on World Teachers’ Day, we will celebrate teachers with the theme Teachers: Leading in Crisis, Reimagining the Future. The day provides the occasion to celebrate the teaching profession worldwide, take stock of achievements, and draw attention to the voices of teachers, who are at the heart of efforts to attain the global education target of leaving no one behind. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly added to the challenges faced by edu...cation systems throughout the world. In this crisis, teachers have shown, as they have done so often, great leadership and innovation in ensuring that learning never stops, that no learner is left behind. Around the world, they have worked individually and collectively to find solutions and create new learning environments for their students to allow education to continue. Their role supporting students with the return to school is just as important. (UNESCO, ILO, UNICEF AND EDUCATION INTERNATIONAL) We are very grateful to every teacher in SGDSB for continuing with your extraordinary efforts to support learning and well-being. Today, we all celebrate you! Happy World Teachers’ Day! See more

November 15-21, 2020 is Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week. Superior-Greenstone District School Board staff and students will be engaged in learning more ab...out bullying and its effect on student learning and well-being. Let’s all start the week with kindness. The good feelings that we experience when being kind are produced by endorphins. They activate areas of the brain that are associated with pleasure, social connection, and trust. These feelings of joyfulness are proven to be contagious, encouraging more kind behavior by the giver and recipient. Acts of kindness help us form connections with others which are reported to be a strong factor in increasing happiness. https://www.edutopia.org//teaching-kindness-essential-redu

Superior-Greenstone District School Board is actively implementing many safety measures to try and reduce the contraction and spread of COVID-19. We are also in...tentionally focusing on the mental health and well-being of our staff, students and communities. We want to prepare as much as possible in the event that we have a positive case in one of our communities. The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered social stigma and discriminatory behaviours against people of certain ethnic backgrounds, individuals who have contracted the virus as well as anyone perceived to have been in contact with the virus. People can be labelled, stereotyped, discriminated against, treated differently, and may experience loss of status because of a perceived link with the disease. There have been significant issues come up for people who have been diagnosed. They are being labeled as ‘careless’ or having ‘brought COVID-19 to the community’. It is understandable that there is confusion, anxiety, and fear in our communities when we have positive cases. Unfortunately, these factors are also fueling harmful actions and have devastating consequences. Stigma can break down community relationships and cause social isolation which might contribute to a situation where the virus is more likely to spread. This can result in more severe health problems and difficulties controlling a disease outbreak. Stigma can make people hide the illness to avoid discrimination and prevent them from seeking health care in a timely manner. During these uncertain times, no matter our circumstances, everyone is facing unique challenges. These are times where we must be kind and practice empathy. We must challenge our fears, realign our thinking and stand up for friends, family, and community members who may be impacted by stigma and above all, practice patience, kindness and understanding. If you have questions about what SGDSB is doing to manage COVID-19 see our website: http://www.sgdsb.on.ca/covid-19

The Ministry of Education has launched a new voluntary COVID-19 School Screening tool. It is a simple and fast online tool that will allow parents and essential visitors to indicate whether they, or their children, are experiencing particular symptoms of illness (from a specified list), are currently subject to quarantine requirements or have otherwise been advised to isolate. Based on their responses, they will receive a clear indication as to whether they should go to school that day or not, and if not, what to do next. The tool reflects current provincial health guidance and will be continuously updated should that guidance change. https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/
