Why I love trail runners. They take care of each other on the trail. They say hello to other trail users even if they don't know them. Completing is important, not just time. They are up for adventure and challenge. They appreciate a good view. They give bears right of way. They give back by volunteering at races and doing trail work. They take care of nature by staying on the trail. Happy Valentine's Day.

Registrations for Fat Dog and Brigade have opened this week. In Fat Dog, the 120 is full and there's now a waitlist. There's one more spot in the 50 mile; some spots are available in the 70 mile, 40 mile and relay. Fat Dog is on Aug 6-8, 2021. Brigade is on Sep 11, 2021. The Brigade has 2 distances of 50 and 19 mile on the historic HBC Trail between Tulameen and Hope, BC. Manson's Ridge is quite amazing, Website links: https://www.fatdog120.ca/site/registration.html... https://mountainmadness.ca/brigade-race/ See more

On a positive note, here's some trail running highlights from 2020. Seven runners did the full Fat Dog route in August and I got to be an aid station! As small groups, we were still able to do trail work on trails like Bonnevier and Skagit River Trail and that helped maintain our sanity. We planted the endangered white bark pine seedlings off Bonnevier. Two separate groups got FKTs on the Brigade HBC route: Marina Striker, and Katie Mills and Hilary Spires. Eastgate community... gave Tom Moore a thoughtful sendoff because he just retired from trail work (he's in his eighties and cleared countless trees over the years!). Assistant Race Director, Erik Bird, and I were able to have Fat Dog planning meetings at the Pinnacle Hotel in North Van because they are so good at managing protocols. Mountain Madness joined the Canadian Endurance Sports Alliance to help with a return to sports. I got to run North Van trails again and run into people I haven't seen in years. And we now have the Fat Dog suck it up whiney baby mask! See more

What do races mean to you? We invite you to be a part of the safe return to racing. Join the race endurance industry in December by sharing what races mean to you using the #StartLineImpact. Post race memories and tag your local government officials, brands and running news media. Like many industries, the endurance race industry has been hit hard by the pandemic. As a result of the crisis, the global race industry is collaborating like never before to create covid-secure protocols for the safe return to racing. There are many promising signs for a 2021 season that include in-person events. We invite you to be a part of that comeback. It's time to pull out those photos and share happy memories!

And now for something completely different, Katie Mills and Hilary Spires also got an FKT on the HBC (1849) Trail but from the opposite direction to Marina Striker, and the opposite way to our Brigade race route. From Peers Creek to Tulameen 50 miles in 11:35! And that's more elevation. Congrats! https://fastestknowntime.com//katie-mills-hilary-spires-hu]-R&c[0]=AT1oM_pR0-eCX5veJoD-py8YdfW9FbVoxOMDnmyySeJLBkDTKV1kGD5JzV6HXfQZvZUorXaLxsXO4cDJdbqM3w5xra7Wy2MYSZHrRM0d31FCEIM96KHyN2i__60HSiam_a-f4flsTS9lstU8eBW2TdvHX1u1EnRPsySPVCu1xUvVcE4

Big congrats to Marina Striker for setting a new FKT on the Brigade 50 mile race route from Tulameen to Peers Creek (outside Hope) in September! Following the HBC (1849) Trail, her time was 12:44:17 and 6 minutes ahead of the previous best time 12:50:05 set by Corinne Legault during our Brigade race in 2017. Her co-runners Erik, Ryan and James also got to experience Manson's Ridge! Did you know that horses actually went over that ridge back in the fur trading days? https://mountainmadness.ca/brigade-race/

Runners who are well familiar with Frosty Mountain in Manning Park may be able to provide urgent info needed to help Search and Rescue find Jordan Naterer. Specifically, info about drainage basins as marked on the map. And if you were on Frosty last Saturday or Sunday, call Vancouver Police at 604-717-3321. Here's the poster and link to original post by Samuel Caleb Wee. https://www.facebook.com/groups/219398411533380/permalink/1945440752262462/?__cft__[0]=AZWg_18NqTN2adh30xP0wkgEZXflHMDbvnTVfk0VEymdqHMMC37jx0E6emuSBQDY_sEQm46Ng3tTZaSzKwFE8yqFKuP2-_cO4Kx-NirxeWDzxewrO31hbeZQZ8ski9rIzOAd7Pa7NNL286ABFKsMlaH41LChnV3Q7g37k3Mz-MfgrTgrgnGC9C1ElyvpteXWEutJ-CunTYKVt_bUZ1U1sxfNc5-Gz5UjJim_xcetZFXcCQ&__tn__=R]-R
