After you file your taxes, CRA will complete a quick review of your tax return and generate your Notice of Assessment. This will either come to you in the mail or electronically on your CRA My Account. There are some important pieces of information to take from your Notice of Assessment. It’s always good to check if there are changes between the assessment and what you filed. As I mentioned last week, if there was a slip that was missed when you filed your taxes yourself, ...but CRA had a copy in their system, they will automatically make this adjustment. It’s always a good idea to take a quick look at the Explanation of Changes section to see what may have caused a change from what you filed. The other important section is the calculation of next year’s RRSP Contribution Limit. This will tell you how much you can contribute from March of the current year to February of the following year. Most people have built up a sizeable cushion in their contribution limit, but if you have been regularly contributing, you want to make sure you know what the limit is and that you don’t exceed it. It is a lot of work if you accidentally go over the limit and need to fix it. The Notice of Assessment is an important document to save for your accountant for next year’s tax filings. Even though that will be 12 months from when you receive the document, make sure you tuck it away to provide to them. It will help them gather information such as your RRSP contribution limit, tuition carry-forward amounts, home buyers plan contributions, lifelong learning plan contributions, and any capital losses that you have been carrying forward. Remember that if you have not filed your taxes yet, you have until April 30th to avoid any penalties. I will continue working on any tax returns that come in after the deadline, and get you caught up as quickly as possible. Reach out today and lets get started!

Today is April 20, and the tax deadline is ten short days away. It's important to file your taxes by April 30th, even if you owe money, but know you can’t pay the balance right away. The primary reason is to avoid any interruption to benefits you are receiving, including COVID-19 relief payments. Eligibility for programs such as the Canada Child Benefit, GST Credit, and any other provincial specific programs are based on your 2019 and 2020 tax returns. Filing on time helps to... avoid having these payments stop while CRA validates your eligibility. If you are not filing on time because you have a large amount owing, CRA will work with you to come up with a payment arrangement, and they are more accommodating if you file on time. If your total income in 2020 was $75,000 or less and you received at least one COVID-19 relief payment, you will automatically receive interest relief on your 2020 taxes owing until April 30, 2022, if you file by April 30th, 2021. This relief will not protect you from penalties for filing your taxes after the deadline. The Mobile Accountant will be accepting tax returns until April 25th to guarantee they are filed by April 30th deadline, and I have a few spots left. Make the most of your tax return and reach out today to get started!

Happy Friday! With only two weekends left this Canadian Personal Tax Season, I recommend you spend 20 minutes pulling all of your tax information together if you haven't already filed. It feels so good to get your refund cheque deposited into your bank account so you can allocate it to savings, investments, or put it towards something special you've been eyeing. If you owe the government money, make sure to submit your taxes before the April 30 deadline to avoid paying penalt...ies and late fees. Want help making the most of your return? Reach out today and let's get started!
