Amazing solidarity from Canadian academics in support of academic freedom on Palestine! Following CAUT's censure vote, academics have begun to boycott speaking ...engagements at the University of Toronto, leading to a "slew of cancelled events across campus"! Last year, the UofT revoked a job offer to academic Dr. Azarova after a major donor complained to senior administration about her scholarship on Israel. This was widely seen as a major violation of academic freedom, and an attempt to silence supporters of Palestinian rights on campus. In response, last week the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT), representing 72,000 faculty and academic staff across the country, voted to censure (boycott) the UofT until it takes steps to address these violations and re-extend its job offer to Dr. Azarova. While the UofT surely wants this problem to just go away, we are now seeing evidence that Canadian academics have taken the CAUT's boycott call seriously! A number of speakers have declined to appear at previously scheduled UofT events, leading to many cancellations. This is an encouraging show of support for the right of academics to freely criticize Israel's racist practices against Palestinian. It is also a major pushback against attempts by pro-Israel groups to intervene in university affairs to silence criticism of Israel. CJPME encourages academics to continue to boycott the UofT until it reinstates the job offer to Dr. Azarova and can demonstrate that it is not discriminating against pro-Palestine views.
