Art is hard. When art-making one starts with a lot of questions, and not a lot of answers. The work can get exponentially more challenging as personal processes meet in collaboration. Everyone must play the same game, with the same rules, on the same team, together. Often artists are taking creative risks that impact others, and that must be responded to in turn. The process can be mentally, physically and emotionally exhausting. Our Artist Voices series continues with an e...ssay written by Keshia Palm - actor, director and dramaturge who underlines the importance of working together when times are tough. Here’s this week’s Nestruck on Theatre column from The Globe and Mail. https://www.theglobeandmail.com//article-factory-theatres/
"A lot of theatre practice operates through instinct.... But instinct isn’t universal. What works in one culture may not work in another. In my experience, what works in rehearsal halls run by dominant-culture directors too often takes for granted ways of thinking and seeing that marginalize, oppress, objectify, or disappear entire peoples and worlds and silence potentially productive members of the creative team whose instincts are different. Doing what instinctively works... can mean never considering choices that might be surprising, challenging, or unsettling. Choices that make audiences see the world differently." Our Artist Voices series continues with an essay written by Ric Knowles, who has worked at Modern Times as a dramaturge on Hallaj, The Death of the King, and the ongoing Thirst workshops. Ric has worked in the professional theatre in Canada for 40 years at theatres ranging from the Mulgrave Road Theatre to the Stratford Festival, most recently with MT Space, Factory Theatre, Tottering Biped Theatre, Pleiades Theatre, Cahoots Theatre, and Modern Times. Ric is also a multiple award-winning author or editor of over 20 books on theatre and performance, including Theatre & Interculturalism and Performing the Intercultural City.
