Today marks International Nurse’s Day, celebrated on the birthday of Florence Nightingale. I read a few variations of this year’s theme: We answer the call, which highlights the courage and commitment faced by nurses in all areas of practice during these incredibly trying times, along with a voice to lead, which focuses on a vision for the future of healthcare. The pressure faced by our healthcare system since March 2020 has been unparalleled. Florence Nightingale, best... known as the founder of modern nursing, was referred to as the Lady with the Lamp. In the traditional sense, she would tend to patients throughout the night with a lantern in hand. In a metaphorical sense, she brought light, the hopeful sort of light, into the lives of many injured soldiers. Today, we thank all nurses, for the light they have continued to bring to their patients through fear, uncertainty, and chaos. Your commitment, your dedication, and your perseverance are so appreciated.

We could spend hours discussing how this past year has affected our health; both physically and mentally. Instead, this post is geared towards focusing on small ways you can feel a little better. 1. Move your body: You've heard it before: There's no better mood booster. The good news is that even a little can help, try starting with just 10 minutes of activity and work your way up; ideally the goal is 30 minutes 3 times per week. Interestingly, the 30 minutes doesn't need... to be continuous (3 10 minute sessions works just as well)! 2. Where possible, get in the sun. Again, the magic number is 10, so try to work in 10 minutes whenever or wherever you can. Vitamin D plays an important role, supplement where necessary, but sunlight itself acts as a mood-booster by increasing serotonin levels. 3. Put your phone away and do something creative. Studies demonstrate that small acts of daily creativity can improve well-being and facilitate energetic feelings. I like colouring (I know, it sounds childish, but try it!) and have recently started allocating 30 minutes every morning to creative writing! Find what works for you, maybe it's playing an instrument, trying a recipe, or painting. The goal is to get a little lost in the practice, it's almost a meditative experience, you'll come out feeling lighter; I promise! 4. Compliment someone!!! This ties into the previous point, sometimes we need to get outside ourselves a little ... Spreading happiness is the easiest way! I know we're not seeing people a whole lot, so this can be difficult, but think of someone in your circle, give them a call, or send them a text, let them know you're thinking of them, or share that you're proud of them ... Whatever's applicable! If you see a stranger, and you like their shoes, tell them!! See more

The structural composition of fascia is roughly 75% fluid. The fascia is the most abundant material in the body; it surrounds all areas of the body. The fascia responds, adapts, and morphs to provide: Cushion in joints, space between every cell and organ, and an easy glide between muscles. It's no surprise then, that the health of the fascia is dependent upon hydration. Unfortunately, the adage "drink more water" doesn't do the trick. Drinking plenty of water is an elemen...t, but it's not enough by itself. Fascia becomes dehydrated from repetitive stress and strain: Most movements create joint compression, and result in dehydration. Whether you're active or sedentary, dehydration is occurring within your body. When dehydration spreads, the issue becomes systemic impacting your joints, muscles, nerves, organs, and every single cell within your body. So, how do you rehydrate dehydrated cells? 1. Movement. Movement stimulates the lymphatic system to pump fluid through the body. 2. Stimulate the connective tissue (foam rolling or gua sha .. We like the fasciablasters too!) The fascia is elastic and pliable, using a tool stimulates the receivers in the connective tissue to restore fluid volume. 3. Dry Brushing! This stimulates the skin and uses the fascial system to flush out toxins that accumulate around the cells due to dehydration. 4. Electrolytes ... If the fluids we're looking to rehydrate the cells within our tissue aren't filled with the right nutrients; we're wasting our time!! We need electrolytes to survive, there are 7 major ones: Sodium, potassium, calcium, bicarbonate, magnesium, chloride, and hydrogen phosphate. With this in mind, your diet has a huge impact on fascial health! See more

Happy Mother’s Day! Much like every day since the onset of the pandemic, this holiday is yet another challenging one. We say this every year, and this year is no exception: To be celebrated on mother's day, you need only be a nurturer. Nurturing relationships set the foundation for growth. To all the grandmothers, great-grandmothers, step-mothers, adoptive/foster moms, surrogate mothers, mothers-to-be, single fathers, aunts, sisters, neighbours, and mentors, today is f...or you! For many of us, we are able to identify those few, key people who nurtured us through formative years and through dark moments. For each and every single individual who has ever shown kindness and compassion while offering their love unconditionally, you are a nurturer, enjoy today ... We'd hug you if we could!

"I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you do. I don’t know what keeps you up at night. I don’t know the dreams that make your life worth living. But I do know this. There will never be a better time to do this thing that you aim to do. Do it today.... Fear, uncertainty and timing can be crippling. You will never know everything you need to know. You will never be an expert until you begin. The hardest part of writing is the first sentence. The hardest brushstroke to make is the first mark to blank canvas. But no one wants to stare at blank canvas. They want to see a work of art. So start today. The first step is always the hardest." - J.M. Haynes See more

2020 disrupted just about every aspect of ordinary life and exercise routines are no exception. Work-from-home, remote learning, and public health guidelines for gyms and fitness facilities that include capacity limitations, cleaning protocols, mask wearing, and social distancing changed how, when, and where we exercise. We often overlook the simplicity of efficient movement. We don’t need to follow a strict, regimented exercise routine to be healthy. Movement isn’t alwa...ys planned; it can be the subconscious incorporation of movement into the rhythm of your day like taking the stairs up to your apartment, sweeping the floors after dinner, looping around the block when you go to check your mail, working to engage and activate your core muscles while you sit and watch a tv show ... The list goes on. As Katy Bowman says we don’t understand the difference between movement and exercise. There are simple ways to incorporate and utilize natural movement patterns like walking and squatting to ensure we’re working towards more active lifestyles.

The ancient symbol of harmony: Yin and Yang. These symbols remind us that life is a balancing act and most fulfilling when we learn to embrace the dualities of life: The ups and downs, the good times and bad, the joys and challenges. Yin and Yang are Taoist concepts. Yin is more internal and passive while Yang is more external and dynamic. When applied to yoga, Yin is a slower practice that targets the connective tissues and joints through passive poses. Yang yoga work...s with rhythm and repetition to activate the muscles and circulation to develop strength, stamina, and flexibility. Yin and Yang Yoga fuses these complimentary practices to facilitate a state of physical and spiritual balance. The duality seeks restore energy through relaxation. ROTATOR CUFF STRENGTHENING - Comment your favorite rotator cuff exercise below! The rotator cuff is a group of 4 muscles and their associated tendons ...that span the shoulder joint. These muscles are the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis. The rotator cuff is extremely vital to dynamic shoulder joint stability, as they are the only muscles that directly span the glenohumeral joint. While our bigger muscles, like our deltoids, lats, and pectorals control gross movements around the shoulder, the Rotator cuff muscles act to stabilize the glenohumeral joint during larger arm movements. The shoulder is inherently a mobile joint. Think of the head of the humerus as a golf ball and the glenoid cavity its tee! You can imagine how important strength is in a mobile joint like the shoulder! Here are 5 AMAZING Exercises which address the rotator cuff muscles: 1 Side Plank With Shoulder External Rotation 2.Quick Shoulder External Rotation 90:90 With Resistance Band 3 Supine Shoulder External & Internal Rotation - Dumbbell 4 High Row To Shoulder External Rotation at 90 Shoulder Abduction 5 Sidelying Shoulder External Rotation [] Your shoulder relies on a healthy rotator cuff, whether you are fixing things around the house, exercising, or just going about your daily life using your arms. Effective today Sudbury has transitioned into the yellow zone of the COVID19 response framework. This does impact group classes within the studio. However, we are navigating this with numerous protocols and safety measures in place. We truly appreciate your patience, understanding, and compassion throughout all of this. Our priority is ensuring the safety of everyone while continuing to provide mental and emotional support through movement.

Don’t we all need someone to believe in us, not for what we do but for who we are? Today, we hosted our first workshop since January 22nd. We are truly honoured to be able to host Willa Paterson for a Yin / Yang Workshop designed to restore balance within the body. The practice of Yin Yoga is not just physical. Yin forces a sense of stillness upon participants while encouraging participants to hold a pose for a long time thereby stimulating the meridians of the body. Upon ...release, energetic stagnation can be released; this may manifest as pains, headaches, or negative emotions such as jealousy, frustration, or indecisiveness. Willa’s knowledge, coupled with her experience, made this workshop a safe and nurturing session for participants. Willa’s authenticity and energy are much appreciated. Her next Yin / Yang Workshop is scheduled for Saturday November 21st at 1:00PM. If interested, please contact: [email protected]

I can say with 100% certainty that I've posted this quote before ... There's a reason it's being reposted: YOUR FASCIA IS IMPORTANT! The term fascia refers to the biological fabric that holds us together. Fascia is a network of connective tissue that binds all 70 trillion cells of our body. Your fascia provides a framework that helps support and protect individual muscle groups, organs, and the entire body as a unit. In short, fascia is the soft tissue scaffolding respons...ible for maintaining structural integrity. Fascia has an essential role in hemodynamic and biochemical processes, and provides the matrix that allows for intercellular communication. Traditionally, fascia as a medical term applied only to certain dissectible bits of fabric within the body. More recently, the definition of fascia has expanded to include ALL collagenous-based soft tissues in the body. You’ve likely heard it countless times before - each system of our body plays an important role that affects the other systems. This rings especially true with fascia! The vitality and strength of your fascia is key to good health and synergy throughout each system of your body. Fascia is a system, both embryonically and anatomically. Fascial fabric constitutes one single biomechanical regulatory system we benefit from seeing it, training it, and treating it that way. In case you haven't seen it before, below is a link to one of our favourite videos detailing the relationship between fascia and pain https://www.youtube.com/watch See more
