Family Literacy Day (Jan 27) promotes the importance of adults and children reading together to strengthen family ties and encourage lifelong learning! Taking t...ime every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, improving a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well. From the Eric Carle Team: It is with heavy hearts that we share that Eric Carle, author and illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and many other beloved cl...assics, passed away on Sunday, May 23rd at the age of 91. When asked why he thinks The Very Hungry Caterpillar has remained popular for so long, Carle said, I think it is a book of hope. Children need hope. You, little insignificant caterpillar can grow up into a beautiful butterfly and fly into the world with your talent. Thank you, Eric Carle for sharing your great talent with so many generations of young readers. #RememberingEricCarle

Today is #TakeMeOutsideDay! Today, learners and educators across Canada will head outside, marking the tenth anniversary of this initiative that has seen over 1... million students participate since it began! This commitment is a small gesture we realize students should be outside every day. But this collective gesture across the country can have a big impact - raising awareness about the importance of outdoor learning and simply encouraging students to spend more time outside. Today is a day that can remind us of one thing we all have in common across this vast country, something that unites us from coast to coast to coast - the land we live on. Indigenous history and values are rooted deeply in a connection to nature. This country’s geography shapes the very core of who we are. We are truly fortunate, but also have a responsibility, to be stewards of this land that offers us so much. This year, we have been confronted with a crisis so big it rattles our institutions to the core and offers an opportunity to rethink and redesign the systems we have taken for granted. Outdoor learning needs to become a central feature of our education system, providing benefits that will positively impact individuals, society, and the environment. Today, it’s amazing to see teachers, educators and administrators who are committed to students learning outside, because not all classrooms need four walls. If you can commit one hour outside today to show your support for these students across Canada, we would appreciate it! https://takemeoutside.ca/tmoday/
We’ve prepared guidelines for families of Virtual School students to outline the responsibilities and expectations of the school, students and parents/guardians.... We encourage you to review these guidelines with your child. Thank you. https://drive.google.com//134cB8hPwb3kFRey67s1ISVVNN/view

| Recently on Instagram there was a posting from a Blac...k student of the HDSB upset with an issue involving marks. It received dozens of comments and likes. Although the specific incident that came to light this week has been resolved, the much larger issues both she and the comments illustrated have not yet been fully addressed . It is clear from the comments and sentiments expressed by her and the other Black and racialized students of the HDSB that there is much work for us to do to end anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism. These students and former students have expressed views and experiences which, as Director I am saddened to hear. Their experiences in our Board are both real and palpable. We are, through our Equity and Inclusive Education department and our staff, working hard to address systemic racism. However it is clear that we have to do more and there is a need to do it faster. The HDSB will take the experiences of these students seriously and will be held accountable for necessary change. We will listen to parent and student feedback of their experiences and will work to eliminate the experiences of systemic racism for our Black and Indigenous students. Stuart Miller Director of Education
