A lot of entrepreneurs personally identify with their work, which leads to their moods and sense of selfworth becoming intertwined with the ups and downs of their business. This can result in burnout. If this is you, how do you overcome this? Please share your advice in the comments!

Melanie Wong is the owner of Olive + Splash Athleisure Apparel a sustainable clothing brand located in Burlington ON. Melanie has been in operation for 6 years and shared her story in last year’s Mohawk College Alumni Association issue of Intouch Magazine. Discussing how she created the brand, Melanie also gave Intouch some great advice to aspiring entrepreneurs. Being an entrepreneur is an emotional roller coaster. There will be times when you question why you’re doing thi...s. Then something amazing happens. If you’re passionate about it and it makes sense, keep at it. How do you define success? Sales? Number of employees? Profit? Yes, all is important and provides you with metrics that show growth, but every week we make wins that should be recognized. They could be gaining a new client, increasing your social media followers, or finding a more streamlined way to complete some administrative tasks. Celebrate the little things, think of where you’ve come from and plan where you want to go. Be optimistic. Too often people are scared of failure. We have been trained to believe that failing at something is negative. In the world of entrepreneurship failure and taking risks is part of the process. Tyler Otterspoor is the owner of Ivy League Electric Inc., an electrical contracting business he started over 5 years ago. Tyler has had to take many risks as he’s grown his business, whether it was hiring someone new or accepting a job he’s never done. Sometimes those risks fail and ot...her times they succeed. He says you need to challenge yourself and don't give up. There's always going to be hurdles, hills and valleys. Take it as a learning experience and as a challenge and move forward. If you put your mind to it and you work hard enough, you’ll get there. Now more than ever businesses need to re-evaluate their systems and processes to stay a float through these tough times. At Mohawk College we have resources that can support communication and business challenges you’re currently facing. Many companies pivot, more than once, as they scale and grow. Whether your customers demand something else, the industry has changed, or you’re not seeing enough progress, most companies pivot at some point. Daryl Cummins is the managing partner at A3H Imaging. He began working in the industry at the age of 14 and started at A3H in January of 1999. Daryl purchased the company back when they were just producing film and realized he needed to pivot shortly after. The technolog...y in the company was becoming obsolete and we had to make a change to stay in business. Today they focus on business-to-business services, creating brochures, booklets, forms, and direct mail content for their customers. In our interview with him, Daryl mentions we are looking at changing again. Right now, especially with COVID, people are less interested in a physical medium and a lot of it is changing to digital media. Over the past 8 months too many businesses have needed to pivot to stay afloat in this uncertain world. Whether that means finding a solution to ship your product or transforming your business to a digital one, business owners do what they need to stay relevant. See more
