We realize these are challenging and confusing times for many people. As an evidence-based organization, we’d like to encourage everyone to follow the existing public health advice around #covid19: wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap, practice social distancing, and stay home if you are sick. You may have seen social media posts touting the health benefits of supplements, herbal remedies or diets. There is no scientific evidence for many of these claims. However..., there are many things you can do to keep up a healthy lifestyle while self-isolating. Our team of experts have put together some tips on staying healthy while doing your part to stop this outbreak. - Remember to exercise! Regular moderate exercise reduces stress and improves immune function (PMIDs: 29713319, 26477922, 28088704). Try one of the many home workout apps available - Worried about getting groceries? Choose veggies that last! Cabbage, potatoes, squash, beets, carrots, onions and cauliflower will last a long time in the fridge or pantry, and are rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, and fibre - If you’re having trouble getting fresh produce, try buying frozen fruits and vegetables instead of canned as they are more nutritious and have less salt - Try not to eat too many canned or processed foods. These are high in salt and saturated fat and can exacerbate existing health problems such as cardiovascular disease (PMIDs: 26746178, 16484595, 21735439) - If you’re not going outside as often, try taking a vitamin D supplement. Vitamin D is important for proper immune function, cognitive health and bone density - Mindfulness exercises have been shown to reduce stress (PMID: 25053754). Take a break from social media and focus on your mental well-being! Above all make sure to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, practice social distancing, and stay home if you’re sick! Over the next few days we’ll be posting more tips on how to stay healthy and active during this time. Watch this space! #health #nutrition #exercise
