Mommy Monitor 08.12.2020

In 2011, the Public Health Agency of Canada estimated that there were 6,546 women living with HIV in Ontario. However, there is a lot of uncertainty with this number: it could range between 5,100 and 8,000 women. Of those, 50% were women from countries where HIV is endemic (the majority being African, Caribbean and Black women). People from African, Caribbean and Black communities are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS in Canada. In 2014, they represented an estimated 16...%, or one in seven people living with HIV in Canada while representing only 2.5% of the population. In 2014, the estimated new infection rate among people from African, Caribbean and Black communities was about 6 times higher than among other Canadians. Despite recent progress that has seen new HIV diagnoses decrease by 21 percent from 2010 to 2016, black women still accounted for 6 in 10 new HIV infections among women in 2016 in the US. #protectblackwomen

Today is #worldmentalhealthday and is a reminder that so many of us are not ok, although we are trying to be for our families and for ourselves. We encourage all parents burdened by stress, anxiety, depression, etc- to tell ppl who care about you that you are not ok and seek support. At Mommy Monitor we continue to provide therapy through our clinical therapist- if you would like to make an appointment use this link: https://www.mommymonitor.ca/mental-health-support... More information about maternal mental health in Canada. In 20182019, most (60%) mothers who recently gave birth rated their mental health as excellent or very good, while nearly one-quarter (23%) reported feelings consistent with PPD or an anxiety disorder. Maternal mental health is affected by socio-economic status, with research showing higher rates of PPD and depressive symptoms among mothers from marginalized groups, including people living with disabilities; recent migrant mothers, asylum-seekers and refugees; and mothers self-identifying as Black or First Nations. Mothers with adverse life experiences are also at a higher risk of developing mental disorders, such as those living in food-insecure households or in emergency or conflict situations, and those who have experienced violence (domestic, sexual or gender-based) or natural disasters. Black women and black families in Canada are often met with many challenges that make it difficult for them to live safely, in full health and with access to all they need to live according to the life they have works for. A lot needs to change and it begins with knowing the facts and sharing our truths. #blackwomen #blackfolks #blackfamilies #blackhealth #blacklivesmatter #blackchildren #blackadvancement #blackcanadians
