Pat Riley is recognized by the New Brunswick Federation of Labour (NBFL), in collaboration with Argus Audiology, as the First Recipient of the Owen MacLennan Tr...ade Unionist of the Year Award. Argus Audiology donated $1,000, in the name of Pat Riley, to the NBFL Blair Doucet Youth Summer Camp. I am proud to be able to recognize Brother Riley’s leadership and many contributions to labour movement in Saint John, New Brunswick and on a national and international scale, says Daniel Legere, President of the New Brunswick Federation of Labour. Brother Riley exemplifies the spirit of this award. Someone passionate about breaking down barriers, mobilizing members around common objectives and furthering diversity and inclusion and promoting social justice. Pat Riley has decades of experience in the labour movement and as a community activist. Some of his involvement includes being the longstanding Business Agent and Secretary-Treasurer of his union local 273 of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA). He is also the Co-Chair of the Hatheway Trust, Labour Exhibit Centre and Lily lake Pavillion. He has served, in the past, in various capacities, such as President of the Canadian Maritime Workers Council, Zone Coordinator for the International Dockworkers Council, area Vice-President for the NBFL, Chair of the Saint John Community Foundation, Board member with the United Way of Greater Saint John. He is also currently involved with a human rights complaint which aims to protect the rights of visually impaired transit riders in Saint John. I attribute our success today to the strong work ethic that I learned from my Dad, believing that there is no task ever beneath me and that a hard day’s work is normal, says Norma Eaton, Co-owner of Argus Audiology and daughter of Owen MacLennan. Argus Audiology is so proud that the first recipient of this award is a trade union icon who’s name is synonymous with the Port of Saint John, comments Bill Eaton, co-owner and son-in-law. Argus Audiology collaborated with the NBFL to create the annual Owen MacLennan Trade Unionist of the Year Award. It recognizes individual trade unionists who have made a significant and/or ongoing contribution to the labour movement. This award is created in the loving memory of Owen MacLennan who worked at Eastern Bakeries from 1951 to 1994. He had a strong work ethic and was an active member of the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco and Grain Millers Union (BCTGM) local 406 in Moncton. Brother MacLennan passed away in 2010. This Labour Day, Canada’s unions are calling on all levels of government to focus on investments and community supports to help restart our economies. Learning ...from the health and economic chaos in the United States, Canada’s unions will be pushing for a Canadian plan that focuses on: Replacing lost jobs with better ones Strengthening Canadian public health care Disaster-proofing our social safety net New Brunswick has weathered the pandemic better than most jurisdictions. Canada has also fared much better than the United States. This success is because we all worked together. That’s what we need to keep doing in the months ahead. New Brunswickers understand the role that governments play stabilizing the economy during tough economic times and the responsibility that government has to lead the economic recovery. says Daniel Legere, President of the New Brunswick Federation of Labour. Our province must address long-standing inequalities that have been exposed throughout the pandemic. Issues such as the lack of available child care spaces, improving seniors safety by making long term care part of public health care and making sure that all workers can access paid sick leave when they need it. This year, we cannot celebrate Labour Day the same way as we have done in the past. Typically, labour councils organized events throughout the province. This year, the Saint John and District Labour Council is organizing a Facebook Live event on Monday September 7 at 1 pm. to celebrate the many contributions that working people make. New Brunswickers are in a unique position as we go to the polls on September 14 to choose our next government, concludes Daniel Legere, We have the opportunity to elect a government that will focus on leading the economic recovery by focussing on replacing lost jobs with better ones and disaster-proofing our social safety net to better protect us in the future.

Open Letter to Premier Higgs & Members of All-party Cabinet Committee on Novel Coronavirus Dear Premier Higgs and Members of the All-party Cabinet Committee on... Novel Coronavirus, As we move through the COVID-19 pandemic, two issues have become obvious. If we are to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus then it is critical for families and individuals to stay home and self-isolate. The second issue is, we now understand and recognize the importance of those who work in the health care field and those who we rely on for essential services be they grocery clerks, pharmacy staff, women’s shelter support staff, cleaning staff, gas station workers, food production workers, and more. The New Brunswick Federation of Labour is writing you with straightforward requests. The most effective and appropriate way to recognize the value of the essential workers who have helped keep our economy moving and society safe, is to modernize the Labour Standards Act. The province needs to ensure that all workers have access to paid sick leave, paid emergency days, a fair and decent wage, and should they contract the virus, a guarantee that they will automatically be entitled to workers’ compensation. All workers should have access to 5 paid sick days and 10 additional emergency days if required due to a health pandemic or other emergency situations. No worker should fear losing their job as a result of getting ill or having to take care of a family member. In light of COVID-19, we believe It is time to introduce changes in workers’ compensation legislation. As you know in certain job categories, such as a firefighter, some illnesses are presumed to be work related. These workers do not have to wonder whether their claims for compensation will be accepted. We are calling on the province to recognize that any essential workers, sick with COVID-19, it should be presumed to be work-related. Frankly, we believe the province needs to re-visit its minimum wage provisions and commit to a path to $15 an hour over the coming 2 years. The recent cash outlay from the Federal government was clearly intended to improve the salaries of low-income essential workers. A single payout does not do justice to the work these essential workers provide. Vulnerable workers in New Brunswick need your attention. If we have learned anything it is that they have kept our people safe and healthy in many ways at great risk. Our greatest thanks to them would be to ensure they have decent wages and benefits, and strong protection under our labour, and health and safety laws. All workers deserve this. The province must address the deplorable gender and income inequities that exist in our province. Our Federation commits to working with you in discussions with the Federal government on issues like equality, universal pharmacare, and childcare. We know you support these issues as we do, and that you understand the benefits to our economy and society by having these programs in place, and adequately funded with increased transfers by the federal government. We firmly believe that an economy that works for all people in New Brunswick is possible. Premier Higgs, we appreciate all the work that you have done in this pandemic. It is now time the province makes the necessary changes to better protect our working heros. Even heros need decent wages and working conditions. These workers had our back during the pandemic. It’s time to show them that we now have theirs! Sincerely Daniel Legere President, NB Federation of Labour Moncton, NB
