Please note that there will be NO MOVIE on Monday March 23rd and for the rest of the Spring season due to the current ongoing Covid-19 situation. Please disregard this morning's email which said otherwise. It was set up for auto-transmission, and we neglected to cancel it. Our apologies for any confusion. Another email to follow.

UPDATE: Unfortunately all remaining films for the Spring 2020 season are now canceled due to the current COVID-19 situation. Thank you for your understanding. IT MUST BE HEAVEN will NOT be screening on March 23rd. A church in Nazareth with a door that won’t open. A deserted Paris. A New York supermarket with as many guns as fresh produce. In his fifth feature - which garnered a Jury Special Mention at Cannes 2019 - Elia Suleiman, a famed figure in Palestinian cinema, explores... the world with his trademark, wide-eyed wonder, one that, here, belies an incisive critique of nationalism and identity. With a screen presence that has been compared to Buster Keaton’s, Suleiman lends a detached bemusement to his observation of the minute oddities of daily life - which, when reflected on, reveal so much more than most would like to admit. Our next film is SORRY WE MISSED YOU, screening March 9th at 7.30pm. From socially conscious director Ken Loach and longtime collaborator Paul Laverty (I, Daniel Blake) comes a wrenching portrait of a hardworking English couple sliding deeper into debt and despair, despite toiling in all-consuming jobs. Now in his sixth decade of filmmaking, Loach (I, Daniel Blake; Jimmy’s Hall) has become something of a cinematic institution even as his films continue to boldly criticize ins...titutions, often depicting how working-class people can be caught in the gears of systemic exploitation. A drama of such searing human empathy and quotidian heartbreak that its powerful climactic scenes actually impede your breathing. David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

LA BELLE EPOQUE is our next film, screening February 24th at 7.30pm. In this high-concept comedy from Nicolas Bedos (Mr. & Mrs. Adelman), a luddite cartoonist suffering an existential crisis hires a VR company to recreate a happier time in his marriage, as he tries to reconcile the golden-hued past with an inescapable digital present. Starring Daniel Auteuil, Fanny Ardant, and Guillaume Canet (Cézanne et moi), La Belle Époque blurs historical eras while tracking a charismatic... curmudgeon’s existential reckoning. Recalling the films of Charlie Kaufman and Olivier Assayas’ Non-Fiction, which also starred Canet La Belle Époque invites us to peer into the past, consider how it made us who we are, and to muse on who we might still aspire to be.
