And so the caning begins. After going back and forth with multiple scenarios in my head, I decided to make a rabbet on the door to accept a frame which would be screwed on to hold the sheet cane in place. Could have gone with the traditional way of using splines to keep the cane in place. But I wanted the layer of cane to be offset behind. And this seemed like the most obvious way to do it. Went pretty smooth. Just as anticipated. Now waiting till tomorrow for the soaked sheet cane to dry and shrink and hopefully tighten without warping the doors.
First coat of finish on the doors. The one on the left is sanded down with 400 grit, ready to receive the next coat. The idea is to keep the layers thin enough to bring out the porous grain pattern of white oak. I generally like to stick to a natural finish with most woods. Bit I am kind of liking where this is going.
This was one stressful glue up. The first door came together like a charm. Just as I had planned. And because I was over confident, I didn't do a dry fit on the second door. Turned out the dowel hole for the centre piece wasn't deep enough. And by then it was too late. The glue started drying and I couldn't pull it apart without damaging it. So I had to sacrifice the centre piece. Rule#1 #alwaysdoadryfit At the end of the day, it turned out fine. And more importantly the doors came off the clamps dead flat. Here I am checking for problem areas with a raking light before the finish goes on.
We had some unfortunate roof leaks in the wood shop setting me back by weeks. After some moping (and lots of mopping) I am back trying to get the entryway cabinet finished. Some of the finished panels were damaged and I had to redo them Here i am building some solid white oak doors for an entryway cabinet. Would have normally used dominoes or dowels, but a little skeptical in this case since I am going to be caning the door frames. My first time trying out cane and I want to make sure the joints don't open up once the cane tightens. #cane #caning #whiteoak #doors #entrywaycabinet #bridlejoint #openmortice #dowels
Light and music. When they come together seamlessly and it transports you to a dream. Until of course you realize that its all getting recorded.
Work in progress pictures. I am hoping this exercise is going to be of some use when I start building my life size cabin by the lake. Or not. #marquetry #logcabin #spaltedmaple
Picked up some spalted maple slices a while ago. Didn't realize there was an entire story written on it until I sanded it down. I saw turbulent skies and a desolate backdrop for a perfectly perched little wood cabin. And so I have brought out my little marquetry tools once again to explore the terrain. What do you see in those lines?... #spaltedmaple #marquetry #woodcabin #woodworking #explorations #turbulentskies #desolatelandscape
Thats where the laminated piece ended up.... on a privacy fence.
Any guesses what the collective noun for clamps is? A squeeze of clamps... A clutter of clamps... A cramp of clamps... A clench of clamps... ... A cramp of clamps... Well, I had to use all of them to get this lamination done. Never handled a lamination glueup this big. Measuring at 10ft length and 4.5" wide, I had to resaw this white ash to 3/16 of an inch to build up the layers. See more
