Does knowledge always have to be imparted by telling or verbal communication with the child? In the early years children are eager to move and use their hands and senses. The Montessori method of education gives the child the opportunity to learn hands on activities - learning through experience. When the senses are engaged in focused work children develop higher levels of intellectual and cognitive development. We are in the business of transforming lives; serving your child's needs in a nurturing and stimulating way.

Oh my gosh! Not again! Have you ever seen a child engage in an activity and do something over and over again. For example put the mud or dirt on the truck and dump it out, put it on and dump it out...It is adult nature to want to offer something different at this point. Children when engaged are learning and developing in many areas. Their muscles, nervous system and brain are functioning to collate information and draw conclusions. Learning is not always about receiving information. Experiential learning does much more. It allows the child to distinguish, discriminate draw conclusions of similarities and differences leading to a higher level of intellectual development. Next time you see a child engaged sit back and watch in wonder....

Day 21 Parent Support - From Chaos to Cosmos.... Nurturing the mind is as equally important as nurturing the child's physical and emotional wellbeing. Most parents are currently quite anxious that their children will be behind in their school work. Well, in my experience I have found children to have all the intelligence but their mind is full - full of expectations that others have of them or with other disturbing unresolved issues. The mind is a temple of understanding; und...erstanding of its surroundings and the people that impact it. The mind is fertile soil depending on what is sown. Sometimes unintentionally we overwhelm children with our expectations and create obstacles in their development. Perhaps one of the best time tested ways to clear any obstacles is to have open discussions with your child to determine their thoughts and feelings, to include funfilled activities in the day and to be cognizant of our own problem solving and coping skills. This is perhaps an opportune time most of us have to grow a rich family culture at home. So let's roll up our sleeves or not - all we need is unconditional love and the will to be involved. See more

Day 20 of 21 Parent Support - From Chaos To Cosmos... Freedom is an innate need in every human being. War within oneself, in relationships and between countries stem from the desire of wanting freedom. Are we confining and constricting our children? Freedom offers the child the opportunity to become more responsible individuals and experience natural consequences - the law of cause and effect. Are we able to refrain from the role of constantly doing or telling the child w...hat to do or allowing them to take on more responsibility? Montessori is not about academics. The higher academic levels come as a result of setting the right foundation in the early years. Through deliberate observation, responding to the interests and needs of the child and by offering freedom to choose (within parameters of safety and respect), the child becomes a happy, calm and satisfied individual. Day 19 of 21 Parent Support - From Chaos To Cosmos.... It is natural human tendency to want to live a purposeful and meaningful life. When this is not so, we begin to feel unsettled and unhappy. Children will sit for hours with activities that are purposeful. These are goal directed activities that offer the child experiences of cause and effect. Did I just lose you? Is this sounding technical? Wait! These activities are very simple and yet very often go unnoticed for the value it brings to the child. Taking care of both indoor and outdoor plants enhance the child's wellbeing and offer deep engaging experiences. Are you ready to begin planting with your child?

Day 18 Parent Support - From Chaos To Cosmos... Giving life to the true nature of the child requires courage and perseverance by the adult. The Montessori method ensures that children are not corrected. Instead allowing the child to self correct. It is amazing to see the child grow in wisdom and confidence when we step back and stop controlling the child's every move. Most parents want their child to be the best in everything. Nature has gifted each human being with individua...lity. Take time to appreciate and value your child's uniqueness. We each are perfect just as we are. Let's stop pressuring our children to be any different from their own amazing selves and allow them to become the beautiful human being they can be with patience, acceptance and, giving them the freedom to explore and learning from their mistakes. Day 17 Parent Support - From Chaos To Cosmos.... For some the word Montessori means respect and freedom. Whereas for others it's a method of education. Then there are those that have never been exposed to Montessori and I have heard a couple of them say, " is it a cult?" Dr. Montessori in 1907 opened the first Montessori school in Italy. She took a group of children from the slums and from agressive/violent children they became calm and respectful human beings. The children t...hat society had disassociated from were able to sit the Grade 1 entrance test and to everyone's shock were able to pass the test and access education! That was the beginning of Montessori education and has since gained immense popularity. So what makes Montessori so special. Foremost it nurtures the child's spirit. Respect for everyone and everything is fostered at a very young age. The method also responds to the child's natural tendencies and needs. The need to move, the need to do and be in action and the natural desire to learn and progress from one skill to the next. All this within a level of freedom that allows the child to develop their own willpower to become self disciplined individuals. Day 16 Parent Support - From Chaos To Cosmos.... Striking a balance between nurture and structure can be quite the challenge. How do you determine if you are giving your child too much attention or being too strict? There are no rules to finding the balance between the two. Acceptance of the child is crucial at all times in either situation. This develops a sense of trust and self respect in the child. Introspecting on what your parents' parenting style was, is a good place to start in understanding your own parenting style. Ultimately it is the blend of both structure and nurture, and responding to your child's personality that will create more harmonious relationships as well as lead to the child's success in other areas of their life.

Day 15 Parent Support - From Chaos To Cosmos.... Time to assess what the chaos is about. While offering child/parent coaching (aside the school community) these past couple of weeks I'm noticing signs of anxiety in children that are going unnoticed. No matter how centered and grounded we as parents try to be, uncertainty and anxiety is an emotion floating in the air. We pick these up or have interanilized these. Moreover, these then transfer vibrationally to our children. Physical and eye contact will offer the security children look for. Respecting and acknowledging their feelings then responding with compassion goes a long way in managing situations. Be sure to check in with yourself first. Take a couple deep breaths, count to 10 and then determine your best choice of action.

Day 14 Parent Support - From Chaos To Cosmos.... To all the grandparents out there... Meaningful experiences no matter how short or even virtual can be very qualitative. Grandparents have an advantage of being more emotionally centered and less in the action of life like most young parents. Grandparents don't generally have the additional pressure of being the fulltime caregiver. The ease in the relationship has a very normalizing effect on children. Conduct memorable zoo...m sessions. Amidst a myriad of ideas I have found children love real stories. Get those old photo albums out and tell them a story about you. They will learn history as you talk about your past , geography as you put into context where you lived, science as you discuss technology 'now and then'. Most importantly they will learn to respect different lifestyles and honor your journey. You don't need a lesson plan; just your story. So line up a couple of old photos and make some more memories. Day 13 Parent Support - From Chaos To Cosmos: Ever been on a treasure hunt? Perfect for families with children of varied ages. Even in your backyard or neighborhood, a scavenger hunt can be just as exciting and invigorating for the entire family. So put on your hats and walking shoes and off you go! Remember to acknowledge and celebrate the emotions that come with a scavenger hunt.

Day 12 Parent Support... From Chaos To Cosmos... Who doesn't want to handle money. Remember the days you played monopoly and handling the money made you feel like you had conquered the world! Real money comes with it's own energy. Exploring what value money holds in the family is crucial and no better time than uncertain economic times. For some money is power, for others it translates into service. For many it is a means to one meal for the family. A great conversation starter would be to play some money games. Coin sorting for preschoolers, a cup of tea for yourself, apple juice for your child and you are all set to keep those little fingers busy while fostering a sense of value for money.

Day 11 Parent Support - From Chaos To Cosmos.... I'm still hung up with Earth Day! Children find a deep sense of understanding and joy in learning about the world they live in. The continent we live in lends to a wide range of cultural ideas such music, dressing, flags, landscapes, languages. Begin with discussing your own family culture. Play dress up!

Day 10 Parent Support - From Chaos To Cosmos: Yesterday we celebrated Earth Day. We live on Earth, share its land, water and air. It is never too early to foster in children a love for Earth. This creates a sense of belonging, responsibility and connection to their surroundings. It begins with us adults and parents role modeling respect for Earth. A great place to start is to reduce wastage in the home. I trust you will find the image below inspirational and play your part in empowering our children - leaders of the future to love and protect Earth.

An environment rich with purposeful activities for the child fulfills their natural desire to be busy and keeps them engaged and satisfied. Art and Craft is a great place to start.

When we keep their hands busy their minds become absorbed in 'doing', the nervous system gets activated and brain development takes place. Its spring time...why not bring out the bikes and get washing...a great way to engage the child!
