A drum set student asked: Why rudiments so hard to put around a kit? My Response: This is far from the best format to allow a discussion with as involved a process as this. However, in short, perhaps because rudiments were initially designed for developing hand facility for "single-surface" instruments a Marching or an Orchestral approach "single-surface" musical instrument. Here's the thing, there is an opinion that rudiments do not "translate" well to drum set. Because the ...study rudiments, the simple application, focuses on movements based on a linear approach to movement. Which is fine for single-surface performance. Whereas drum set requires an elliptical approach to movement. That doesn't mean forget rudimental hand development to gain better facility. It's a more involved process to developing the "how" (without details, here) to move. So, what we're discussing is not simply "how" to move around only the drum set, but more so how to even initially start the study of rudiments for hand development. I say "initially, so you don't have to unlearn and then relearn, how to move your hands "even" on single surfaces. Learn it the first time and save yourself time. In other words, it's one thing to simply play rudiments. Up and down movements, the end. My opinion about learning from YouTube, Facebook and videos on the internet... when your source for learning is YouTube, Facebook etc. you move from one concept to the next... you're learning is fragmented. You can't ask questions and get a knowledgeable response that applies to you. You're not going to get a deeper idea , or ever master one concept. You end up with less than you expect, it's better to learn from an experienced knowledgeable private teacher in person who has goal structured lessons that get you results. Yes, that sounds self serving, however, trying to be objective about it... that is how many masters became just that... even if you're not looking to be a master. Step back and consider your sources for your learning... Understand the student and build a professional music relationship...
