Most Memorable Lifts at Past US National Championships (Part 8) Since the in-person US National Championships were cancelled and replaced by an on-line competit...ion, I decided I would post some of the most memorable lifts I have seen from PAST Nationals. Today we'll see all-time US great Robin Byrd Goad (still just Robin Byrd then) lifting in the 52 kg class at the 1989 Nationals in Houston, Texas. After opening in the snatch with an easy 57.5, Robin proceeded to set TWO American records in the snatch, first with 62.5, and then 65, shown here. Robin always had excellent technique, but note in particular the perfectly straight arm pull and then the beautiful double kneebend and top pull. She tried even more, 67.5, on a 4th attempt, but missed. Then in the C&J, she made 70 and 75 before missing 77.5. Of course she won the class easily. And as we all know, Robin continued to improve and went on to bigger and better things by winning the World Championships in 1994, with 80 + 95 in the 50 kg class.

Alberto Blanco (Cuba) History in Color: March 16 1978, Moscow, Russia Alberto Fernandez Blanco of Team Cuba performs a clean-and-jerk lift in the 100kg class ...at the 1978 Friendship Cup in Moscow. Alberto Fernandez Blanco (b. 1950) was one of the best world class Cuban Olympic weightlifters of the 20th century. Blanco was a 2x Olympian and competed for Cuba at the Summer Olympics in 1976 and 1980. He took the 6th place in the 90kg class in Montreal and won a bronze Olympic medal in the 100kg class in Moscow. Besides his bronze medal at the 1980 Olympics, Alberto Blanco won 3 bronze medals at the World Championships (1977, 1979, 1978) and a silver medal at the 1975 Pan American Games. In 1980, Blanco won the 1979 Pan American Games. As for the cover photo, Alberto Blanco lifted a 365kg (162.5+202.5) total and it was the 4th result in the sub heavyweight at the 1978 Friendship Cup in Moscow.
