Hello MOSD community! Help us get the word out, we still have placements open for our toddler and preschool programs this school year. The Montreal Oral School for the Deaf (MOSD) has been around for over 70 years and is the only school in Quebec that uses the auditory-verbal approach to help children with hearing loss learn to listen and speak. The MOSD’s in-house audiology department can monitor the children’s hearing technologies, while the educational strategies open the ...capacity for spoken language. For the youngest babies, we go to homes or daycares to work with the families, the preschool program starts at age 3, and we have an elementary school program. The goal is to mainstream kids (while continuing to provide support). Many of our students become fluent in more than one language, and over 80 percent go on to post-secondary education. We really want to reach families as soon as possible after a diagnosis of hearing loss! You can visit https://montrealoralschool.com for more info, and to make an appointment.

Montreal Oral School for the Deaf supports newborn hearing screening! Early identification of hearing loss allows intervention to begin immediately following diagnosis and provide support to children with hearing loss and their families. The first three years of life are considered as a critical period for the development of listening, speech, and language skills. The objective is for the child with hearing loss to develop to their full potential and have the same opportunit...ies as their typically hearing peers, not only for school but for lifetime success. Please note that the following text was taken from AGBell website. Consult https://www.agbell.org/Families/Hearing-Loss-Explained for further information Simply put, sound, which includes speech, enters the ears and is received and moved along a defined pathway to the auditory areas (or hearing centers) of the brain where that sound is understood. The different parts of the ear and rest of the auditory pathway act as way stations by reacting to and moving sound to the next wa...y station in the hearing system. Any time there is a disruption to the travel of sound as it makes its way to its final destination, the auditory areas of the brain, the result is a hearing loss or disorder. The outer ear, middle ear, inner ear and auditory centers of the brain all make up the auditory system. Here’s how it works: The outer ear collects sound waves moving through the air and directs them to the eardrum. The eardrum vibrates with sound. Sound vibrations move from the eardrum through the ossicles (bones in the middle ear) to the cochlea. Sound vibrations cause the fluid and tiny hair cells inside the cochlea to move. Hair cell movement creates neural signals, which are picked up by the auditory (hearing) nerve. The auditory nerve sends signals to the auditory areas (or hearing centers) of the brain, where they are interpreted as sounds and speech. So, while sound is received by the ear, it is actually heard in the brain. #mosd #agbell #auditoryverbal #hearingimpaired #school
