"When people are determined they can overcome anything." An important message for us today. This brand new mural was painted on a wall of Union United Church, Canada's oldest Black congregation (next to the Lionel-Groulx metro station in Montreal). It commemorates the 30 year anniversary of the ending of apartheid in South Africa and Nelson Mandela's release from prison after 27 years. It also commemorates Mandela's visit to Montreal and the Union United Church that same year... on June 19; Montreal was part of Mandela's tour due to its citizens' assistance in ending apartheid (in which Union United Church played a key role). "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me" (Philippians 4:13). (Artist: Franco Égalité; photograph: Dennis Wendt)

We just concluded an inspiring virtual Stake Conference, where we were uplifted by speakers from our congregations as well as Elder Gordon H. Smith of the Quorum of the Seventy. Katelyn Wendt (age 12) shared these sketches she drew of each of this morning's speakers.

Day 2 in our 7 day series of gratitude. From Jo-Anne Théoret, the President of our Stake (diocese) Relief Society (women's organization): I am grateful for the people I meet in my job as an addictions counsellor. They remind me that trials help us learn and grow and that with God all things are possible and no challenge too big to overcome. Their strength and resilience inspire me. #givethanks

For the next 7 days, we will be sharing at least one gratitude post per day, from our members or friends in the community. Here is the first, from the President of our Stake (diocese), Jay Glowa: Over 31 years ago my wife Fatima and I were married in a temple. This sacred ceremony married us not only for this life, but we were married for eternity. We are so thankful for the knowledge we have that life continues after death, and that we are united with each other and our children for this life and forever. #givethanks

Yesterday Russell M. Nelson, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, shared a message of hope and healing with the world. He encouraged everyone to share messages of gratitude on social media each day for the next 7 days, using the hashtag #GiveThanks We invite all to view President Nelson's brief (~10 min.) message and join us in this challenge. As we reflect upon, pray about, and share what we are grateful for, we will be individually and collectively strengthened during this challenging time we live. We are grateful for our wonderful members, friends, neighbours, and associates.
