We recently brought in a raw pet food called Answers that is super exciting! Answers Pet Food is what we’d consider a great wholefoods-based pet food with scientific and environmentally conscious principles. The idea behind it is simple although difficult to put into practice. They created a raw pet food that is enhanced using fermentation to inhibit pathogens while improving the digestion of the pet. Basically, enhance good bacteria in the food until pathogens don’t stand a ...chance. The longer it ferments, the better it inhibits pathogens so when it is in your fridge thawing, Day 2 food is better than Day 1 food. It may smell a bit more sour but that is a good thing according to their Nutrition Science Director. In their safety validation tests, they found that when they tested for E-coli, Salmonella, listeria and lactic acid bacteria that competitive inhibition worked really well. They also did not find any positive salmonella sample in fecal tests. They do this through either using raw goat milk whey and kefir . Answers Pet Food has been around since 2009 so it is not new, but it is the first and only fermented raw pet food. Did we also mention that it is a family-owned operation that supports organic family farming, uses biodegradable packaging, no synthetic ingredients, no GMOs or pesticides and practices humane animal raising? They also have livestock that is grass-fed and grass-finished. So how would you use Answers Pet Food? For customers feeding smaller dogs, Answers won’t break your bank. However, for medium- to large-sized dogs, we’d recommend adding some of their items as part of your rotation. The reason is that digestion and gut flora are integral to health and that is why we keep on talking about Health from Inside Out. As such for medium- to large-sized dogs, we’d suggest their fish stock, which is functional as in it can help joints, provide thyroid support. Carnivora Raw Food Recall Resolved! In June of 2020, Carnivora Pet Food initiated a voluntary recall of a few SKUs. At that point, we were informed that certain SKUs of Carnivora were potentially linked to four cases of E Coli 0157-H7 occurring between February 14th and May 16th, 2020 in humans. Public Health Canada and Canada Food Inspection Agency reached out to stores that might potentially have the SKUs for those months to inform us of these issues. We did not have pet ...food related to the recall for those months. At that point, Public Health Canada mentioned that the raw pet food could be a correlation and not necessarily the cause of the E coli. Since then, Health Canada has been randomly testing Carnivora products. Carnivora’s facility has gone through a Canada Food Inspection Agency and Public Health inspection. In addition, according to Carnivora, Health Canada conducted months of random testing of Carnivora products across Canada. Based on information shared by Carnivora on Oct 22, 2020, Health Canada has officially closed the investigation into Carnivora as the source of the E-coli. According to the Manager of the Outbreak Management Division and Centre for Food-borne, Environmental and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (CFEZID) for the Public Health Agency of Canada, Carnivora products passed the tests (absolutely no trace of 0157:H7 E.coli). All other bacteria found were well within normal findings for raw, whole animal pet food products. It should also be noted that there was absolutely no bovine/avian cross-contamination. Carnivora also shared with us that it has been invited to join a newly formed task force initiated within a division of Public Health to formulate guidelines for all raw pet food manufacturers in Canada. We wanted to share this result with Carnivora feeders to ensure they knew the official outcome of the investigation. It is also a bonus to note that Carnivora made proactive changes to their 25 lb bulk packaging to include instructions on how to handle raw food. These are important messages and hopefully, the Canadian raw pet food industry moves to a more stringent system of ensuring the safety of the food we feed our pets and also accountability when things go wrong. One more thing to add, it is important to practice good hygiene when handling any raw meat.
