Winners of our club's 2020 Mixed Doubles goes to Christine and Gordon! Congratulations! Below is what happened in the last couple of ends with eight other club members watching. It was very exciting! BUT FIRST A BIT OF BACKGROUND: Ralph and Bridget were drawn as a pairs as were Gordon and Christine. It happens that Ralph had won the men's singles and Bridget had won the women's singles. A doubles victory would be a first in a long time, if ever that two people won single...s and doubles. Gordon, a long time club Secretary and club handyman, had not bowled at all this year because of a combination of health concerns and much time spent during the pandemic in the country. As a result, he excused himself from the singles and only entered the doubles to balance the gender mix. Christine joined our club two years ago but did not bowl last year due to work commitments. While she joined this year her first visit was not until September when she assisted with the high school program. HERE'S WHAT HAPPEND IN THE FINAL ENDS OF THE GAME: With 2 ends to play the game was tied. In the second last end, Bridget and Ralph took a one point lead. On the last end, Gordon got a shot in close to take a counting position and Ralph put one inches further away and despite a few more close shots the score was tied and an extra end ensued. After 4 bowls Bridget and Ralph were counting 2 shots less than a meter in front of the jack one to each side. Gordon's first shot split the two bowls and was inches from the jack, his second bowl wicked in, off one of Bridget's bowls in front of the jack ending close to his first shot. Ralph threw a rocket scattering the jack and Gordon's 2 bowls. The jack was much further back and off to the left. The nearest bowl belonged to Christine at least a meter away with Ralph perhaps almost 2 meters away. There was a lot of traffic in front of the jack. Gordon got a second shot in counting and Ralph came close to hitting the jack one more time, giving Christine and Gordon the trophy. This is the first time Ralph, Bridget and Christine have their names on a trophy and a repeat for Gordon who was on the doubles trophy in 2005 with Velma.

Club updates: 1. Men's Championship final. Jaffer is this year's winner. Tie game that required an extra end to determine winner. Congratulations!! 2. Fall school program update: Our club hosted 5 different classes from local schools, ranging in size from 30 to 10 students but most being over 20. Classes came to bowl 2 or 3 times, resulting in coaching approximately 300 students!! One adult club member is required to coach every 4 students. Thank you Bill for all your work, and thanks to all our club members who helped coach.
Our club hosted a lovely group of 26 young adults celebrating 3 birthdays on September 21. What fun! Honest plug: If you are interested in having an event at our green, please let us now. We bowl as long as the weather remains good. Two years ago we bowled until Dec 4!!!!
Progress on the club house!!! Looking really good. And I can see from peaking in the windows, the drywall is up and being plastered. The city has also started to build our "she" shed. Or is it the "he" shed. You decide. : )
This is really a great time for bowling - it is cooler and it extends your summer enjoyment for at least 6 weeks !!!
Better late than never. Tonight we played our 2018 pairs tournament. A nail biting 10 ends; either team could have won. Trophy goes to William and Annie. Thank you to Bill and Dorothy for a very competitive game.
One of our members added glitter to her bowls. Why not!
Lawn bowling trivia! Question: How old do you think the game of lawn bowling is? Answer: Archaeologists have uncovered bowls in tumbs from 5,000 B.C.... Today, lawn bowling is played in 52 countries in 6 continents around the world. The world's oldest surviving bowling green is in Southhampton,England. It was first used in 1299. Our club was established in 1925. Our flag pole was erected in 1949. Check us out!! Canada Day Event - Monday July 1. The club has a tradition of wearing red and white for Canada Day and having lunch together. Despite having no clubhouse or refrigerator, we think it is something worth preserving. So arrive at 10:45 am for an 11.00 am game. Bring a non-perishable lunch and beverage and we can gather to eat under the gazebo or in the park. ... We will bowl again after lunch. Show up for either or both games. Guests are always welcome!!!

If you pass by the park you will notice that the entire club house and surrounding area is fenced off. You may also notice a large trailer near the club house and a second structure on the west side of the park plus 2 portable toilets near Moore Ave. This is all to do with the city's plan to bring the clubhouses up to code and create a new space within the the footprint for some unspecified community use. Your first thought might be can the club operate. The answer is YES, bu...t with serious limitations. We begin with no water - for the green, for drinking or washing the cloths - no electricity apart from our lights - no kitchen or refrigeration - no club house for gathering or storing. So we improvise! Life with a trailer. REMINDER: Our opening day is this Saturday May 4th - barbecue at noon bowing around 12:30; so it would be encouraging to see some of you, whether you plan to bowl or not. Drop over and see our improvisation and chat with us and maybe even throw a bowl or two.

Play Lawn Bowls, live longer and be more healthy !!!! This is the very clear message from Professor Grant Schofield of the Auckland University of Technology. Professor Schofield is considered to be New Zealands leading expert in the field of physical activity and health. From his 16 page, 5,000 word scientific analysis I am attempting to extract and summarise the research results into 600 words and Normal Peoples Language If you would like Professor Schofields full resea...rch report then Email [email protected]. Physical activity, even of a moderate intensity is essential for human health. Prolonged sitting in your Lazy Boy is extremely bad for your health. The only thing worse is smoking! Lawn Bowls is a popular and accessible sport in New Zealand and is played by a wide age group of both sexes. For those over 65 it is ranked very high at No 5 in recreational sports with 13.5% participating compared to golf at No 7 with 10.5%. Walking at a moderate speed for a minimum of 30 minutes is rated among the top exercises for health and playing bowls for 1 hour is about the equivalent of a 30 minute walk but has the advantage of using more of the body particularly with bending. While physical activity (PA) is important for all ages, older adults are of particular concern firstly because they have lower levels of PA and greater levels of sedentary behaviour, and secondly their PA continues to decline and sedentary behaviour continues to increase with advancing age. Physically active older adults, have improved body composition (body fat and muscle mass); higher bone mineral density; improved cardiovascular fitness and improved coronary risk profile e.g., lower blood pressure, better insulin sensitivity, lower cholesterol. Psychological improvements, such as mental health, cognitive function, and the management of disorders e.g., depression and anxiety, have also been found View movement as an opportunity, not an inconvenience. Dropping something on the floor which you then have to bend down to retrieve is an excellent exercise Be active every day in as many ways as possible. use it or lose it !!! Do at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most if not all days of the week. If possible, add some vigorous exercise for extra health benefit and fitness My summary of Dr Schofields research is that playing lawn bowls has multiple health benefits in most aspects of health of both mental and physical including osteoporosis, diabetes, alzheimers, some forms of cancer, depression and anxiety. Playing bowls can prolong a healthy and enjoyable life. It is great to see many players in their 80s still enjoying playing. Bowls is a very easy game to get into. Most clubs offer free coaching and the free use of bowls. Garry Ravenwood.
