It's the last week to get Moo Shu until our Jan 4 - 14th break! We're restocked on favourite like Hong Kong Milk Tea, Ginger & Groundcherry, and Mission Acornplished in pints today (Tuesday). Tomorrow we're scooping these flavours too! One more day of R&R for us and then it's back to service. Tomorrow (Sunday) we are open 12 - 8pm for scoops, pints, bars, Kitto Katsus, and for hot dumpling bowls! We're taking dumpling orders by phone or at the door. Phone orders open at 10am and we recommend calling in since they take ~15mins to cook and put together. Free Healthcare is an ice cream we've made every year for Canada Day except this year. In celebration that we can abuse our bodies as we please since we have "free" healthcare, we put in all the "bad" stuff: brown butter, toasted marshmallow, and sea salt in a frozen custard. Keeping on theme, we dip this rich and salty caramelly ice cream in dark chocolate and maple sugar! It's a crowd-pleaser! We are scooping our newest vegan ice cream today (Sunday). Dorayaki is an OG Japanese pastry made with two brown sugar pancakes and sweet red bean paste in the centre. We made a vegan ice cream with molasses and kinako (toasted soy) for a deep and malty base flavour with a peanut butter like nuttiness. We added candied red beans for pops of sweetness and texture. You can request easy to follow instructions that show you how to bring our dumplings from freezer to table in 15mins! Try it "hanetsuki" style with an ultra crispy lift-off-the-pan bottom. Mid Autumn Festival is just around the corner! On the menu today (Saturday) is White Rabbit ice cream, a condensed milk, butter, and vanilla ice cream inspired by a childhood favourite: white rabbit candies! These candies are chewy milk candies popular in Chinese communities especially during Mid-Autumn Festival. It's sold in a glass jars that is sealed with a marble and has a flavour like a cross of bubblegum and 7up! This dip bar is made of ramune ice cream and strawberry sauce, dipped in white chocolate and Japanese arare (rice crisps). These days, they are avoiding markets to keep their inter-generational household safe. So we are giving them a hand, selling their produce at our store on the weekends. We're starting to wind down our PRIDE 2020: Safe at Home flavours. The last ice cream to introduce, Coconut Mung Bean with Fish Sauce Caramel, was made for one of our queer staff members here at Moo Shu. "Some flavours that make me feel safe and remind me of home are coconut milk, mung beans and fish sauce. The use of these ingredients are common in multiple Vietnamese dishes, sweet and savoury alike. One of my absolute favourites is bánh xèo, a savoury crêpe eaten with lettu...ce and various herbs and dipped in nc mm (fish sauce). I grew up eating a common Southern version filled with shrimp, yellow mung bean, pork, and bean sprouts. This dish feels like a big affair because of its various ingredients and the patience needed to prepare crêpe after crêpe. It is also meant to be shared and eaten together, which is a big part of growing up in an Asian household. Bánh xèo is an "all in" kind of meal and can get a little messy but that's part of the joy of it. I would love to create an ice cream that's inspired by these flavours that are the foundation of so many dishes that are comforting to me." Our homemade fish sauce caramel is made with "extra virgin" @redboatfishsauce, which adds a funky rather than fishy twist to a classic salted caramel. To balance its sharpness, we swirl it in a rich coconut ice cream and add sweet mung beans for a textural element. Mung beans are common in dessert in Asian cuisine, similar to red beans but smaller. In the ice cream, they add a texture like chocolate chips and a flavour reminiscent of almonds. We are so excited to see our friends @HedgeRowOrchard in the latest edition of @EdibleOttawa! We've been making ice cream with their seabuckthorn berries since 2017 and our newest iteration is vegan!
