We sure got a good snowfall again this weekend!! Weather you enjoy this beautiful white coat on the ground, or you would prefer to go without we all must live with it and especially shovel it! What do you think is the best way to shovel? a) Back straight focusing on using your legs, bracing with your core, holding your breath with exertion? b) Switching sides, lifting small loads at a time, taking breaks?... c) Hiring a snow removal service? Answer is b! Read below as we explain ;) We do recommend that you focus using your legs as they are big powerful muscles but allow some fluid movement of your spine. Shoveling does require you to bend forward and twist, so if you brace your core and prevent these movements from happening, your brain might perceive this activity as a threat and create some hyper-vigilance response. Holding your breath is NOT something we recommend as this increase intra-abdominal pressure and causes more stress on your heart as well as using a bracing strategy of the core. Switching sides regularly as you shovel is a great idea as this creates some variety to the repetitive nature of the task. But why stop there? Try to be creative in how you push lift throw the snow, how you hold your shovel and use a variety of stance. The more options of movements the better. Yes, you may have a favorite side.and thats ok! Just dont to a 100% of the work on that side :). Taking some breaks, lifting a variety of loads, including some smaller ones is a great way to do this activity, especially if you have lots to do. It allows your body to recover and its easier to check-in on how we are really adapting to the task. Finally, for some people, shoveling is an activity that can be quite demanding (either on their physical capacity or simply on their already busy schedule) so hiring a snow removal service might be the best option!
