The residential school system is not a part of Canada's "past" but a very real and extremely painful reality that generations of our First Nations people continue to bear the wounds from. It can be tempting to say, It wasn't me... It wasn't my church...... It wasn't my government... It wasn't my time... It wasn't my province... and to brush it off as something that we are not responsible for acknowledging or changing. But for too long, the Church (that is, churches all of denominations/traditions) have been silent in the face of evils, abuse, manipulation, deceit - especially when done at the hands of the church. Failing to acknowledge evils done within the church isn't limited to residential schools, it continues through congregations everywhere where protecting the "reputation" of the church or the leaders of the church becomes the highest priority, while victims suffer and are silenced. If we can't speak out about the most egregious of evils, we will surely remain silent on the "smaller" offences in the church. As followers of Jesus Christ, we need to be vocal in recognizing the harm that was done through the residential school system, lamenting the church's role and the evils done in the name of Jesus, and the racism that fuelled these evils.
