We are grateful to welcome Physiotherapist Rebecca Atkinson to our practice! A lover of all creation, including our incredible bodies and minds, Rebecca grew up in Thunder Bay exploring the wilderness of water and forests; and being both quiet and active in nature has always been a favorite pastime. Winnipeg and its big rivers were home to Rebecca for 17 years as she developed her career in physiotherapy, t’ai chi and youth-care careers along with starting a family. Work e...xperiences had her caring for people in hospital units, long-term-care, private clinics, gyms, and group-homes. In her spare time she went to St. John’s Anglican Cathedral, Sam’s Place, Stroke Recovery Association of MB, New York Cares and Thunderbird House. Now, as planned, Rebecca, her husband Jason Dyck, City of Morden Economic Officer, and their boys have finally returned to Jason’s hometown in rural MB and we are thrilled to welcome them back! Rebecca will bring a much needed unique skill set and new service of home-based Physiotherapy to our clinics, serving a population we strongly feel we’ve needed to focus greater on, especially with the isolation effects of the current pandemic, and an increased number of seniors opting to age at home during this time. We are extremely fortunate, as Rebecca brings a significant wealth of experience in this area and we look forward to assisting her with her goals and passions. Rebecca wants elders and people living with disabilities like dementia or a stroke, to have more opportunity for meaningful activity. Her goal is to come directly to your home and help you discover your life priorities. Then, together develop your body systems, & your environment, while coordinating other care partners in order to participate more effectively in the things you love and hold dear in the comfort of your own home. Stay tuned as we continue to highlight Rebecca and her amazing new services this week. Welcome the region Rebecca!

We asked Rebecca Atkinson BMR-PT about her upcoming FREE Webinar Finding Ease In Care Giving and here’s what she had to say! We will be 'watering our brains' so to speak, practicing techniques for neuroplasticity. This is to enhance our empathy, our problem solving skills and our ability to priortize self-care. Your loved one will be sure to notice your evolution if you put these curious, joyful and non-judgemental methods to use. Mark your calendars, May 26th 10-11am... A great post from last year that’s worth re-sharing! Bike Anatomy, Fitting & Injury Prevention: A. When sizing your bike there should be 2 inches of clearance space from your groin to the top tube. B. Seat height: Your seat should be set so that your leg is fully extended (no bend) when your heel on the pedal is at the lowest point of the stroke. Have a friend watch, or tape you biking from behind you. If your hips are rocking side to side your seat is too high! If you ...look down while pedaling, there should never be a point in the stroke where your knees are further forward then your toes. This leads to repetitive wear on the front of the kneecap, and a condition commonly known patellofemoral pain syndrome. C. For most bikers the seat should be kept level D. Handlebar height can be adjusted to above the height of the seat when looking for more comfort, or below the height of the seat for performance. Shoulders at 90 degrees and a slight bend in the elbow. How to make quick adjustments: Neck or Back pain? Try raising the seat Pain in the front of the knee? Raise the seat, and if needed also try to move it back Pain behind the knee? Try to lower the seat Pain in the hamstring? (Back of the leg) Try also lowering the seat Numbness in the hands? Handlebar neuropathy is commonly caused when riders have their wrists cocked back into full or hyper-extension placing pressure and stretch to the ulnar nerve. Adjust your grip so that your wrists maintain a neutral position! See you on the road! See more

It’s no surprise here, as we’ve been seeing an increase in patients coming in as well, but research is now coming out showing that the higher stress levels people have been experiencing during the current pandemic are playing a role in worsening symptoms of TMD (Jaw) pain & Bruxism (grinding). If you are experiencing jaw pain and increased headaches, please don’t hesitate to give us a call for help. Physiotherapists can utilize various treatment techniques including but not ...limited to: manual therapy, massage, strengthening exercises, posture assessments, acupuncture, cupping, & dry needling to assist you in the management and treatment of your symptoms. How to NOT wipe out on the trail like Jared & Marlin. How to STAY on your bike like Tim & Stefan: 1. Hover your bottom over the bike seat (saddle) when biking and riding over bumps, rocks, branches, roots and other obstacles on the trail. Try to keep your body loose rather than stiff so you can move WITH the bike and not against it. 2. Try to hold your speed. This will help you keep your momentum as you enter more challenging portions of the trail and give you a greater chan...ce at clearing those parts with success. 3. When climbing a hill, shift your weight forward 4. Look where you want to go. Keep focused on the trail ahead and trust your peripheral vision to avoid the rocks right in front of you. 5. Get comfortable using and working with all your gears 6. Don’t hammer down BOTH brakes! A good mountain bike has brakes that are strong enough to use just one, and when you find yourself speeding into a quick unexpected turn, try to avoid using the left brake (front tire) as it increases your risk of flipping over the handle bars. Our office knows this all too well! The lake trail at Minnewasta is one of our most beautiful trails in the region and a excellent source of free exercise, fresh air, & beautiful scenery. Whether it’s walking, running, or biking, we hope you have a chance to visit it frequently this summer!

It’s National Nurses Day and there’s no amount of words that could give this profession the recognition it deserves. We thank our friends, family, and community members of nurses who show up, put their lives at risk, sacrifice long hours, holidays, nights, mandated shifts, staffing shortages, and no contract in over 4 years. THIS is their reality, and our reality is that we frankly can’t function without them. Nurses not only care for people, but play a vital role in identif...ying and referring patients who would benefit from rehabilitation. We thank our allied healthcare professionals, we appreciate everything you do. Thank you #nationalnursesday #nationalnursesweek

It’s been a challenging year for us all. While we’ve heard the saying We’re all in the same storm, but we’re not all in the same boat we couldn’t agree more. While we too were one of the many businesses closed back in spring, we feel incredibly fortunate to remain open for patients who rely on our services as part of their physical and mental wellness. As long time Chamber of Commerce members, supporters, board members, and volunteers we stand beside our friends and fellow... business owners who are sadly facing massive challenges during what should be their busiest season of the year. Each of our staff will receive a gift card purchased from a different local business within the community they work this year, and in place of a staff Christmas party we have opted to cater in lunch for our staff once a week for the month of December at all locations. While not much, we are able to spread the love and support to over 20 different small businesses in our communities. We encourage you all to continue to shop local as much as you are able, and to consider curbside pick up and take out this holiday season. We NEED our local businesses to survive and thrive so they can continue to support all our community initiatives like they have been so gracious at doing for so many years

As the months continue of working from home and shifting work spaces around, the onset of overuse injuries like Tennis Elbow are finding their way into our offices. Lateral Epicondylitis or Tennis Elbow is the most common overuse syndrome found in the elbow. A tendinopathy involving the extensor muscles of the forearm, it is found in people who perform repetitive one side arm movements such as computer work, heavy lifting and forceful up and down motions of the palm. Tenni...s elbow presents with pain down the outside of the elbow, sharp pain at the elbow bone (the lateral epicondyle), and pain that can travel down the top of the forearm and even into the 3rd and 4th fingers. Pain can be faint and come on a couple hours after activity, come on immediately after activity, be provoked during the activity, or prevent you from performing an activity. It is important to seek prompt evaluation from a Physical Therapist because other conditions such as cervical radiculopathy, radial tunnel syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome are just some of the ones that can mimic tennis elbow and prevent you from seeing the improvements you are looking for. The sooner you begin rehab, the quicker you will be on your road to recovery. Hoping this will go away and waiting to address worsening pain, will end you up with a lengthy recovery process! It all begins with prevention! So make sure you take extra time to set up an appropriate ergonomic work station that is suited for your needs. Take and schedule frequent rest breaks throughout the day to get up walk around, move and stretch. Make it a regular point to actually make them happen! Pay close attention to stretching, moving and opening up the the neck, chest and forearm. A Physiotherapist will recommend pain management techniques, perform hands on treatment, recommend and fit you for an elbow strap if needed, and set you up with specific strengthening exercises to progressively load the tendon when the time is right!
