I feel the needs to write about Rescues. There have been a lot of posts lately from frustrated people who have been turned down from adoption by Rescue Orgs . Here’s my two cents on this : First of all there are two types of rescues the good ones and the dog flippers . A good rescue will ask you a million questions, you will meet the foster and the dog ....it’s a process be patient. While a bad one will tell you to pay the funds then pick up the dog at the airport off a plan...e ( a very bad move) , no foster, few questions, in a hurry to get the dog out. You are gambling here and could end up with a feral abused dog with zero training = nightmare for someone who is new to training a rescue . The majority of rescues that fail are because the adopter was over their head or did not put the time in. Good rescues ask a million questions because they need to figure out if you are a savvy dog person or a newbie. Why? Because well meaning clueless people adopt dogs all the time with terrible results . They want to avoid another return , so people who have no experience and do not show that they have their ducks in a row will be denied . Things that you need to show in order to be pre -approved : You have a vet that will vouch for you or one that you know you will be going to, you have a dog trainer or obedience/ socialization class lined up, you have a dog walker/ pet sitting lined up, there are friends, neighbors, or family members on board to help. Everyone in your household is on board to help with the dog . You have owned a dog successfully in the past helps too , but if you show that you are educated and willing to put in the time ( crucial) you will likely be successful. You must be willing to crate train, and exercise your dog a lot. Basically this adopted dog becomes your first priority for at least 6 months because it knows nothing or has just started to grasp the basics . You must put in the time, if this sounds overwhelming then save yourself the anguish and get a cat. I can not stress enough that spending time walking and socializing your dog is an ongoing lifetime commitment. The foster parents may have successfully done a lot, but you need to keep it up. A dog is like a 4 legged child, not a toy that you spend time with when you have time. If you don’t exercise and mentally stimulate your dog ( controlled leash walks), it will chew your things apart, bark at everything, become food obsessed and possibly aggressive depending on the type of dog , some need more exercise that others . Boredom is torture for a dog . A tired dog is a good dog. I agree that some rescues go overboard with screening . If this happens go to your local animal control and adopt there, just know that you will be going in blind with no clue as to the behavioral issues of the dog . I suggest taking a rewards based positive trainer with you to help you pick out a dog . If you are still motivated I wish you all the best of luck

If I had a dollar for every time some misinformed person tried to defend the use of torture as training I'd be rich . sadly . kristibenson.com//a-list-of-things-that-shock-collars-are-

https://www.facebook.com//a.1015224939/10156167902036657/ It really has nothig to do wth your dog or how nice it is , if another dog is reactive it means keep your dog away. if the handler says my dog is not okay then get your dog immediately under control . I have seen devastating injuries to nice out of control dogs that mess with a reactive dog despite the clear verbal warnings .
