Clarification on how potential rate increases work Over the last number of days and weeks I have seen some in the mortgage industry incorrectly state that the Bank of Canada (BoC) will only increase/decrease rates by 0.25% at a time. There is no such rule. ... The BoC can raise/lower their overnight rate by any amount they wish. Banks also don’t have to follow and can set their own Prime Lending Rate. The BoC also doesn’t have to wait for their meeting dates, which are listed below, albeit they normally do. For the most recent precedent for both of these scenarios you only have to look to Spring 2020 when the BoC lowered rates by 0.5%, 3 times in quick succession - without their normal meetings.
