A simple, contemplative song about art and artists, by a bard who will be missed.
Michael Peter Smith (1941-2020), R.I.P. Songwriter (The Dutchman). Cabaret and folk musician. Chicagoan. His artistic mind dove deeply, as it ranged widely. A few more thoughts here: http://mosemusicalarts.com/news
Superb Canadian sacred musician Matthew Larkin suddenly has all the time in the world to reflect. On art. On life. On their absence. On "the day the music died." His reflections open the video; Don McLean's rich-in-imagery folk ballad "American Pie" (1971) starts at 5:25. In an empty church. With a classical organist and fine singer accompanying himself in jazz piano vein. Oh my, it's all quite a rendering.
I never dreamed I would consider online piano teaching, but Mother Nature has urged me to give it a try during this odd and ominous virus shutdown. To my surprise, it can work. The teaching is more focussed, less informal, but I suppose some focus and formality never hurt anyone - reminds me of my own long-ago piano studies.
