A group of artist friends and I have teamed up to raise funds for the Ancient Forest Alliance. We are creating art daily from May 1-30, and auctioning the art with half of the proceeds going directly to the AFA. Please help protect our irreplaceable ancient trees with their unique ecosystem (native habitat to many species ie. without this habitat of ancient trees, these other species will be threatened to the point of extinction including birds, such hornbills, owls, woodpeck...ers, small mammals, and insects such as the hover flies). Who cares about insects? Well, all of us should. Not only are many pollinators (no pollinators, no fruit etc), but they are a valued food source for many, including bats which generally live removed from human populations. In addition, deforestation cuts into these bat territories, expelling them and increasing human contact. Bats are commonly carriers of viruses, they are even the suspected origin of covid. Therefore deforestation (clear cutting old growth) leads to increased incidences of novel viruses reaching human populations. It obviously also reduces biodiversity, which means that the "food chain" becomes significantly shorter putting other species's survival on the line, including our own. Less than 1% of our old growth is left on Vancouver Island which was the last bastion of old growth in BC. Logging is occuring in old growth on Vancouver Island right now.
