A little throwback today to kick off October! This photo was taken for Makeup by Christie Read's annual 30 Days of Halloween! Normally, my October feed if filled with lots of creepy, creative shots from this series... but unfortunately, this year's spooky fun was canceled (for obvious reasons). Anyhoo, I loves me some weird stuff so I'm going to post a few favs throughout the month. Let's all indulge me and pretend they're new! :D ... These are hired killers. I met them last year while I was on my way to a safari contract in Zambia. It was day two of the long journey to the camp, I was ill, and the sun was just beginning to set when my driver pulled over. "I hope you don't mind, but these guys need a ride into the park. We've had a problem with poachers lately..."... My driver explained that the mercenaries would be dropped off on the outskirts of the camp. Over the next week they would track (and most likely kill) the poachers. Due to chronic widespread poverty, some locals from remote neighbouring villages turn to poaching in order to provide for their families. In some cases, the mercenaries will apprehend them when caught and they will be taken to jail. However, as my driver explained, once they're released they go right back to poaching; so the mercenaries often take more extreme measures. You might be thinking: Wait... that can't be legal? And you'd be right. The mercenaries (mostly ex-military men) will disappear into the wilderness and return days (sometimes weeks) later, claiming they didn't find anything. But usually the poaching stops. "No one is ever going to find a body out there. And the poachers know this; they know why the mercenaries are there. So the poachers are very dangerous and will sometimes manage to kill one of the mercenaries. But that is rare." Now... I grew up loving animals and there is a very real threat some species face due to poaching. In the past, I've villainized poachers; picturing them as greedy and cruel. However, after spending time in Zambia and witnessing poverty at a whole new level, I felt deep heartbreak for the individuals faced with the impossible task of providing for their loved ones under these circumstances. It wasn't long before we were on the road to the safari camp again; our heavily armed passengers in the back of the pickup truck. I turned around to look out the back window and had to take a picture when I saw the ring the man sitting directly behind me was wearing.

Tony has done everything from dermal anchoring, skin divers, scarification, bead inserts, branding, tongue splitting, ear reshaping... you name it, he's done it! On the scene at Kawartha Dairy in Bobcaygeon yesterday, to photograph Ontario Premier Doug Ford for kawarthaNOW.com. Bobcaygeon was one of the first communities in Ontario to be devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic. In April, Kawartha Dairy donated $10,000 to the Bobcaygeon and Area COVID-19 Relief Fund. One year ago today I left for Zambia to work on a contract for Photographers Without Borders. ...but I almost missed my flight. I consider myself a fairly well-traveled person. I’ve packed for big trips before and even though I’ve gotten myself into trouble once or twice, I’m usually at least (moderately) well prepared. However, I had sooo many documents and work-related essentials to bring with me, I forgot what is generally at the top of the list. ... My passport. So there I was at Toronto Pearson approximately 2 hours before the cut off for check-in... without my f***ing passport. What do I do? Phone mom. I tell her where to find my passport and ask her to calmly drive like a bat out of hell to the airport - knowing full well there is little to no chance she can make it there within that 2 hour window. I find the nearest licensed airport restaurant, order a bourbon, and start looking for the next flight to Zambia. My credit card doesn't even have room for another booking, but that's what I do. With less than 10 minutes before the cut off, my mom miraculously makes it to the airport in time, hands off my passport and I squeeze in just under the wire! Everyone else had already gone through security and were boarding the plane; I felt like Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone 2. With a few grumpy looks from the flight attendants, I made it through the gate and feel such a sense of relief and gratitude. This probably should have been a Mother's Day post, but whatever. Shout-out to my mom for handling this like a champ. Did I mention this was at 10:00 at night? <3

What's your favourite way to beat the heat? Last week, this beautiful momma and I went for a kayak and found a cute little bay to splash around in! It was pretty magical until the mosquitoes came out and got us.

**Dusts off cobwebs** Sooo... I took a social media hiatus these past few months (and a bit of a photography one for that matter), but I figured it was time to crawl out from my hole and share some new work! I recently did a shoot for Forward's 'Fashion in Lockdown' edition, featuring the incredible work of Dave Ross of Branded Heron Leatherworks and modeled by the beautiful Amber Joy.... This session was tricky, friends!! I didn't have access to my usual dream team (I'm spoiled by talented humans) and working within social distancing parameters takes some getting used to... no high fives or hugs = :( However, this session was still a blast! Amber twisted, moved, and hunched, giving all sorts of eerie vibes. I wanted to capture different elements of what has been happening politically, emotionally and spiritually for many of us - to ensnare the unknown of it all. And.. well... to get out some of the angsty feels I've been having since sh*t went sideways. Not that I ever really need an excuse to produce moody pics. --------- Big shout-out to Forward for featuring this set in their magazine; it is an honour to see my work alongside so many talented photographers'. A little PDA for your Wednesday... the squishy romantic side of me is missing it. Okay, so it's been a dog's age since I last posted. I have been taking conscious steps back from social media and my phone because I find it all a little overwhelming these days. However! ... I have an abundance of photos taken from BC-19 (Before Covid-19) and I should probably start sharing them because LOOK! People in a bar, touching each other!! I bet they didn't even sanitize after.
