Meet the maker! There's quite a few new peeps around here so I thought it was about time that I said hello. I'm Lindsay, the person behind @motherandnatureca and wearer of many hats. In addition to doing all the things for my small business, I work full time as an instructional designer, volunteer with @haltonbfi, and I'm always trying to take some course or certificate to learn something new. I'm living the suburb life in Burlington with my husband, our 2.5 children (5yo,... 3yo, #3 due in fall), our 2 cats, and 2 dogs. We're relocating to Barrie next month! Some things about me that you might see in my posts or stories: I live with depression and anxiety and try to be transparent with my struggles We are currently expecting our rainbow baby after a ruptured ectopic pregnancy in Dec 2020 Parenting is hard and I refuse to sugar coat any of this shit show and use sarcasm to cope I grew up in a very dysfunctional and abusive home and have worked tirelessly to break the cycle for my own family I started @motherandnatureca while I was dealing with post partum depression and anxiety. I started out making mostly baby items for my son and the odd baby shower gift. I decided to take the plunge and try to make something of it, then promptly got pregnant with our second and took a year long break While on mat leave with my second, I committed to growing my business and now 3 years later, here we are! I expanded my product line along the way as we became increasingly committed to zero waste in our own home. Wishing a very Happy Mother's Day to all those acknowledging today. I can't lie, mother's day is a mix of emotions for me. Becoming a mother changed me in so many ways. Motherhood has been such an amazing and challenging journey. I'm so grateful for my kids. But on the flip side, I don't have a relationship with my own mother. After being low contact for many years, I chose to go no contact to protect myself and my family.... I'm fortunate to have many other supportive women in my life who have provided love and support throughout my motherhood journey. It hasn't been an easy path, but I've broken the cycle of abuse and dysfunction and I'm proud of the mother I've become. Some pretty pink reusable cloth wipes to brighten your day. Make a great Mother's Day gift too! I've been pretty quiet on here. Truthfully, I'm really struggling. Pregnancy is kicking my ass. I'm exhausted and so nauseous and sick. I'm grateful to be pregnant, but I'm so so scared. I'm constantly wondering if our baby is still alive. Will she come earthside to meet us? I don't think I'll ever feel like we're out of the danger zone until she's squirming in my arms. Pregnancy... after loss sucks. We sold our house and haven't been able to buy yet, which is insanely stressful. I am really hoping that things start to go in our favour with finding a place that works for our family. Otherwise, we'll be putting everything into storage and trying to find something to rent short term. I guess better than living out of our car, but complicated with pets and a growing belly. I saw a picture today of the new owners of our house standing beside the sold sign. We're really doing this. Leaving the home we're started our family in. The home I gave birth in. The home I grieved our sweet Bean in. The home where I said goodbye to my first fur baby and welcomed 2 new fur babies. The home I started my business in. So much has happened here. I know that we'll make so many new and wonderful memories in our new home (if we ever find it) but it's very bittersweet. This is the home where I feel like I found myself and my voice. Anyway... That's why I've been so quiet. I feel like I'm constantly taking tiny tip toe steps up a massive mountain and the mountain keeps getting taller and more unscalable. I can't decide if I want to scream or cry or both. I am emotionally fatigued beyond what I ever thought possible. I absolutely love this view in my studio space. I call it my fabric store. It brings me so much joy and I remember how far I've come and how proud I am. In my experience, I’ve found that others with mental illness don’t buy into it as well. I don’t know if you know this, but my mental health challenges do not only exist on January 28th and in collaboration with Bell Communications. Crazy, ... right? Obviously, I’m being a bit of an ass, but that still doesn’t change the fact that mental illness is not a one day struggle. For people living and breathing this daily struggle, it is all consuming, overwhelming, and even life threatening. I understand that Let’s Talk Day comes from a place of good intentions and people aren’t trying to be jerks or give useless advice. But news flash, hugging a puppy or taking a walk in the sunshine isn’t going to cure my Major Depressive Disorder and General Anxiety Disorder. I get it, YOU might not deal with mental illness, but you know someone who does. You just want to help. You love someone with a mental illness and you see what it does to them and it hurts your heart. It’s lovely that you want to help, want to offer advice, support, and activities to make it all better. But those things won’t make it all better. To varying degrees, they may help an individual struggling with mental health issues, but it’s not a fix all. There is no fix all. All the therapy, drugs, sunshine and puppies in the world, and I can still just wake up sad. Fun, right? Unpopular opinion! I don’t need to be fixed. I’m not broken. My brain works differently than yours, and I need medication to help me. I don’t need to see the positive in everything or fix my mindset to fix my life, or any of those cliché sayings floating around. Not everything is positive, and that’s okay. My mindset isn’t always perfect, and that’s okay. My glass isn’t always half full, and that’s okay. Fuck, sometimes it feels like my glass is on the floor in a million pieces, and that’s okay too.
