The word of the year. Pivot. Perhaps you heard that yesterday, an announcement was made by the Health Minister, Tyler Shandro, which stated that Massage Therapists would have an exemption to the current COVID Restrictions for clients who had a Doctors prescription or referral.... While this is excellent news, we still have to pause while we await direction from our Association and from Alberta Health Services. As we are two days away from Christmas, I have made a personal decision to stay closed until January 4 when I will reopen pending direction from the appropriate channels. I appreciate your patience as I continue to navigate this ever changing landscape as a small business owner in 2020. A special thank you to my many friends and clients who signed the petition that circulated on social media, those who took a moment to write to your MLA and all of you who have advocated and cheered us on. Thank you as well to my doula clients who keep talking and writing to try and get the support you should have. I am thankful. Sweet 2020 Baby, I just want to say thank you. Because in many ways, this year has been a mess.... A bit of a disaster, really. But you. You’ve been the light in the darkness. The calm in the chaos. The joy in the midst of a whole lot of hardship and pain and frustration. So I know people will talk about 2020. They’ll talk about the stress and the fear and the sadness. They’ll recount every bit of the hard stuff that’s brought tears to my eyes more times than I can count. But I’m just so glad that, when I think back on this year, I also get to think about you. Because you’re such a gift. The sweetest blessing. And even though things looked a little (okaya lot) different than I’d planned, and it certainly wasn’t always easy or comfortable, your timing couldn’t have been more perfect. So thank you, little one. Thank you for allowing me to be grateful for 2020. Because it gave me you.

Lets TACO bout it! Hollywood movies always do an amazing Job of making birth look really exciting! And emergent! ... I think of the scene in Sex & The City when Charlottes water breaks on the sidewalk after she sees Big-a stress induced random public water breaking! Dont get me wrong, it happens but only to 5% of people! Heres what you need to know; You waters can rupture in 3 ways- a leak, a trickle or a gush. A LEAK is like when you go to the bathroom and your underwear is wet, but it wasnt urine . Through the day, it will be wet each time. A TRICKLE is like when you have your period and you can feel fluid coming out when you move around. Youll likely soak a pad. A GUSH is a litre of water coming out of you. You wont miss this. Its likely you waters will break after youve had contractions, or might be ruptured by your care provider. Now, what do TACOS have to do with any of it?! We use TACO as an acronym to remember whats happening with your amniotic fluid T- stands for TIME. You want to know what time your water ruptured. Most care providers want labour to have started within 12 hours. A-stands for AMOUNT. Was it a leak, a trickle or a gush. It can be helpful To keep your pad on until you get to the hospital as they can use it to test for amniotic fluid. C-stands for COLOR. Your amniotic fluid should be clear. If it is green, brown or even yellow you want to go sooner than later-it can be a sign of distress or it can be a sign that baby is ready to come. Dont panic, but you should head to the hospital or call your midwife. O-Stands for ODOR. There shouldnt be a smell with amniotic fluid, if there is that could indicate infection. So there you have it. If you had a baby already, how did your water break?

A little Sunday night reminder

I asked my husband about thus recently because I couldnt remember if wed always known that wed have two, or if it came to us after. The truth is, postpartum was REALLY hard for me. After having two very difficult postpartum experiences, it just felt right to stop. It doesnt even feel like a conversation we needed to have. We just felt complete. How did you know when you were done having kids? Or did you know before you starred?

Did you experience a pregnancy in Canada in the last ten years? Some people in Canada tell stories of exceptional, kind, and supportive care and others speak of... disrespect, discrimination, and/or mistreatment during their pregnancy or childbirth. There is very little research about how different experiences of care may link to health outcomes. This is the first study in Canada where community members decided what is most important to understand to improve quality of care for childbearing families. BIPOC are dying at a higher rate than white people and babies all around the world. This is due to the same racism that has them being killed at a higher rate b...y police. According to studies done in the UK between 2014-2016 maternal death of black women is 5x higher than white women. . In the United States black women have the highest pregnancy related deaths of any demographic. . Here is Canada (where research on this matter seems lacking) a study was conducted by researchers at McGill University in 2015 that found 8.9 percent of infants born in Canada to Black parents were born pre-term, compared to 5.9 per cent of white babies. . In all cases of the research that has been done the conclusion is the same- Black people are suffering far more adverse outcomes giving birth than white people. . On a night filled with riots and violence, an expecting mother was hard at work. Battling her own fears and doubt and questioning if she could actually do it, s...he pushed forward anyway. She went from saying, "I can't do it anymore!" to taking control back and finding her own power. She stopped fighting the pain and started listening to what her body was telling her. And then with cries of joy, she brought her baby to her chest. SHE did it. Just minutes later, surrounded by her family, her father prayed. He gave thanks -- for this new life, for keeping his daughter safe through labor, and for bringing the family together. Then he prayed for his grandson's life, not knowing what the future holds for him as he grows into a man. His prayer was sobering. May is International Doula Month! I am really missing the WORK of being a doula and being hands on and present with my clients while they labour and give birth. Since COVID, Ive supported 5 clients virtually which I am so grateful to have been able to do. I have provided that support virtually through phone, text and FaceTime support as requested and required. Still, it isnt the same.... Im hopeful that as things reopen, limitations might be lifted so that certified doulas like myself can continue the work we do and help support not only the birthing families, but help ease the work from the hospital staff as well. Back in April, Prairie Rose Midwifery became Cherry Blossom Midwives in honour of the practice's founding midwife, Cherry Maclagan. Cherry started the practice... after renewing her Alberta Midwifery license in 2017. However, her history dates back to 1989 when she came to Alberta as a midwife from England. She was shocked to discover midwifery was almost unheard of here, and not regulated. For years she worked tirelessly to support women in the community who quickly learned she was offering midwifery care, while also supporting the Alberta Association of Midwives, and was part of the inaugural group to become Registered Midwives in 1999! The new practice name is in her honour, to carry her legacy forward and continue to grow midwifery care for clients and their families in Alberta. We would like to thank Cherry for all that she's done to advance the practice of midwifery in Alberta. We'd also like to send our sincere congratulations and best wishes to Cherry Blossom Midwives as they continue their great work supporting women in Medicine Hat, Lethbridge and Brooks. #ABMidwivesMatter
