Wanna know who this guy is? Well let me take you back, this is J Marion Sims known as the father of modern gynaecology he lived from 1813-1883. He was arguably one of the most famous surgeons of the 19th century, but he got there riding off the backs of enslaved black women, who he manipulated, mutilated and inevitably in some cases killed. To say the least he is a controversial figure for the ethical questions raised in developing his techniques. You might be saying to you...rself, thanks for the history lesson what does this have to do with today? LOTS. There is a huge divide in medical care for women of colour, no matter where they live in this world. The type of perinatal care they receive is not even comparable to that of a white woman’s. While this may not be true to every individual black persons experience, it is true to the majority). Pregnancy & birth being one of the few most memorable and cherished times in one’s life should not be filled with fear and frustration. February is Black History Month and I came to teach y’all a lesson

OPTIONS. I am all about options baby! I’ve been asked this before, and it is totally possible! Some birthers want the birth experience fully to themselves and their partners. Or they are just not comfortable having someone that isn’t like a sister or mother, maybe you already promised your mom she could be there? Maybe you wanted a doula but covid restrictions won’t allow it in your hospital.. This is where the options play a part! These are only a few of the ways to work ar...ound not having your doula physically in your labour room. meeting earlier in your pregnancy so we can plan, discuss and prepare create a birth preference sheet for you to share with your care provider and loved ones practice breathing and rhythmic techniques have access to a doula bag full of birth tools and treats for labouring moms unlimited texting/calling to your Doula #doula #birthdoula #doulasupport #letsdoulathisyourway #pregnancy #expecting2021

1st pic from - @mamasincolor 2nd pic -screenshot of a REAL woman’s experience in OUR RD regional hospital 3rd pic - INFO from a fellow doula @chelseabootsman This is not meant to intimidate you, it is meant to bring light to the situation. Since the pandemic started Doula’s across North America have had to fight for the right to physically attend our in hospital births; clients who pay us to guide and coach them through labour are told we cannot come with them.... While this is frustrating in itself, I feel confident from what I have taught and discussed with my clients to part ways with them, even if it means I am in the parking lot hospital on FaceTime. But I found myself asking, why is it that such a key component to birth is not only undervalued but practically dismissed.. Neither a Doctor or nurse can actually be there to support a birther from start to finish Neither can care for the birthers psychological, physical and emotional needs all while delivering a baby & filling out paperwork. Even your designated nurse will have to leave or check on other birthers. They do not help you make evidence based decisions They do not advocate for you and/or your birth preferences They are not there to support your partner BUT A DOULA IS TRAINED FOR ALL OF THIS AND MORE So why fight off someone who is coming to take some stress of everyone’s backs? Why give birthers the added stress..as if birthing within a pandemic wasn’t enough. Anyone care to share their thoughts? #doulasmatter #doulalife #birthingrights #yourbirthyourdoula #reddeerregionalhospital #birthsupport

Are you considering hiring a birth and/or postpartum doula? There are many different ways Doula’s are providing caring support for expecting people and families during this pandemic. Some hospitals have restrictions at the moment, but that doesn’t stop us from preparing these families the absolute best way we can. I prefer to focus on preparing birthers and their partners by practicing labour positions, showing them how to use my tools & techniques (such as a tens machine, re...bozo, massages & breathing techniques, the list goes on; well in advance to the actual birth. Through discussion we can create a birth preference sheet that you can share with your care providers during the time of labour. This can cut down a lot of unnecessary questions and also gives something to guide the birth so birthers feel in control. In the event that due to a hospital restriction I cannot physically attend a birth; I know my clients feel confident in themselves and the knowledge they have gained. When it comes to postpartum support we as Doula’s are allowed to operate as we fall under the category of paid private child care. I take this virus seriously and will take covid testing prior to supporting a family if asked, other precautions I take are wearing a mask, washing hands often and changing clothes directly before and after a shift. Motherhood is so lonely, and no one talks about it enough! Especially with the way our world is now it can all feel really isolating, what is one thing your doing to stay connected to friends & family? P.s My baby was born Jan 2020 just before the first lockdown, I can definitely say this pandemic has affected my postpartum journey. P.s.s. If you are pregnant or have been; gave birth this last year or are going to be during/whilst this pandemic is still around, you are brave,... you are strong, you are resilient. @moss.andmoon #motherhood #motherhoodtalks #motherhoodislonely #truthbomb #truthtalk #stayconnected #postpartum #birth #journey
