MAKE A WELL BALANCED MEAL!? - Most people I work with know I don't like rigid meal plans. - They may work in the short term but unless you plan on following it for the rest of your life, once you hit your goal the meal plan gets thrown in the trash. ... - Putting together your own meals doesn't have to take all day, it's all in the ratio and selection of the foods! - Here are the key points: - Each meal should be made of at least 80% whole , unprocessed foods. Good health comes from good quality food! - Each meal should have a balance of protein, carbs, and fats, in amounts that YOU can digest easily and meets the needs of your body based on how you feel and activity level throughout the day. - High activity/ stress day will mean your body will need more protein, good quality saturated, monounsaturated, and omega-3 fats, and complex carbs. - Low activity/ stress day will mean you need less protein (keep intake high if trying to build muscle) and less simple & complex carbs. - Experiment with how different ratios make you feel by altering how much of each food takes up your plate! - We all have favorite foods but make sure to mix in a variety of vegetables & protein sources for more nutrients and benefits. Do you know where your last meal came from? - I always love picking fresh veggies from a garden, it's one of my favorite times of the year! - Anytime I can get my food directly from the source I jump at the chance. ... - The impact it has on your health and the environment is incomparable when you consider the fact that most of the food we purchase has to be flown in! - We have such an abundance of land, farmers, favorable conditions, and the environment to grow everything we need but STILL we end up buying food from across the country and even from places like Mexico and South America! - Not only do these foods have to be prematurely picked, coated in harmful chemicals to prevent decay, and genetically modified just to be able to make it to the store, but all these things make the food virtually void of REAL NUTRITION and nothing but a colourful piece of water/ fiber. - If you want more food grown locally you have to BUY IT! Sounds obvious but most people don't go out of their way to support local and organic farmers who provide REAL NUTRITION to us without all the destructive effects on the environment! - You VOTE EVERY SINGLE DAY with what you spend your money on. - Don't want foreign food? HOW MUCH SHOULD I EAT? - MAN OH MAN! - This subject can be so complicated! Like most things when it comes to nutrition and health! ... - The answer to this question needs the answer to other questions for an accurate answer, it will be different for everyone! - The key points that should always be aimed for are... - Make sure at least 80% of your diet is whole foods, organic if possible. - Take into account the amount of physical, mental, and emotional energy you use each day. This will dictate what ratio of macros your body needs! - Experiment with different methods and see which ones promotes the most health, energy, & clarity you desire! - AVOID OVEREATING! Have seconds of you feel you need it but once the cascade of hormones and blood sugar from overeating has started it's too late! This is a huge problem for our society! AVOID foods that cause you to overeat (most always processed foods). - BE PRESENT while you eat! Avoid distracting or stressful environments while eating and TAKE YOUR TIME to chew your food and feel the hunger signals. MOBILITY+STRENGTH= LONGEVITY - Though I haven't posted about it in a while, exercise is always a constant in my life. - Back squats have never been my strong point so working on building them up is very humbling. Adding in the full depth and slight pause adds another level. ... - My new focus and enthusiasm for strength training has been an amazing and fun experience to learn and practice but martial arts will always be my foundation. - Mobility, to me, means the ability to move through full ranges of motion with strength, stability, and grace. - There is nowhere mobility is more important than martial arts. Boxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, they all require you to move through full ranges of motion, at challenging angles all in dynamic movement that lasts minutes at a time. I've always focused and prioritized my mobility training because of this. - Yoga has been my main way of working on this (S/O to @yogaforbjj ) but incorporating methods from strength training books and methods have been a huge help for me as well. - The bottom line is, if you want to have longevity in your exercise and ESPECIALLY in your everyday LIFE, you NEED to be able to efficiently move your joints and muscles through the maximum range of motion without risk of injury. - Nobody wants to be the person who blows out their back or neck lifting a grocery bag. - Creating exercise programs is one of the things I do for anyone I work with who wants to improve their health and start an exercise routine. 2020 was a damn good year for reading! - All the down time of the lockdown and tackling a new perspective and method of health coaching forced me into the best year for personal and professional growth I've ever had. - I am extremely grateful that I'm in the position to be able to take advantage of this and not have any friends or loved ones affected by the state of the world.... - I read books outside my comfort zone and outside of my typical interests for the sake of trying to find new perspectives and ways of looking at life and at the world. I'd highly recommend you do the same. - Books that had the greatest impact on me: Stalking the Wild Pendulum by Itzhak Bentov & Emotional Intimacy by Robert Masters - Books that changed my perspective in one or more ways: The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler & The Giver by Louise Lowry & The Way to Love by Anthony DeMello. - All of these books were great reads and I'd highly recommend any of them. - 2020 set the stage for a deeper level of study and learning for me and I'm only going to keep diving deeper and wider into the infinite ocean of books out there. - What was your favorite book you read last year? YOU FERMENTING YET? - Digestive Tip Numba 3! - Consuming Fermented Foods!... - One of the best ways to ensure healthy digestion is to have a healthy and diverse population of bacteria in your digestive tract. Too many processed foods, vegetable oils and refined sugar really throw the balance off in your system and create an imbalanced ratio of helpful to harmful bacteria. - An easy way to start to heal your gut microbiome is to 1. Stop eating that garbage & 2. Consume fermented whole foods 2-5 times a week! - Avoid high dose probiotic supplements UNLESS you know exactly which strains you need and select a supplement based on your specific situation, otherwise it could just end up being a bacterial bomb in your stomach that further throws off the diversity ratio as those supplements are usually very high dose and very high price! - A much simpler and cheaper option is to eat foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, fermented pickles, and kombucha! These are the foods our ancestors have consumed for thousands of years and relied on as healthy doses of nutrition and a way to preserve food before refrigerators. - I aim to get 3-5 servings a week split between some sauerkraut with supper and some kombucha during lunch time.
