Mr.Kenney, With all due respect. I am a small business owner. My partner and I run a small martial arts school in Okotoks,AB. In March as you know, we were comp...letely shut down for 13 weeks. We miraculously managed to survive, while paying rent, insurance, taxes and raising 4 children. Upon reopening we worked diligently to adhere to all the guidelines and recommendations, even if they were only that. We created cohort groups, enhanced cleaning ( not that it needed much, being a martial arts school our standard of cleanliness is of the utmost importance to us). We did temperature checks on every single student, and spectator (parents). Spectators were required to wear masks, well before it was mandatory. Now a second closure, but aimed at in your words "the backbone of alberta" Small businesses. For the time we were able to open 4.5 months out of 9, we have had the same cohort groups per class. They are broken into age groups and have the exact same cohort group every class. We haven't had a single case of covid. We also have had very little financial assistance, a substantial loan available that needs to be paid back, hard to pay back a loan when you have no income coming in. A grant that is almost insulting, and instead of covering the actual time we were closed, it is available to us for September, October, November, and yet doesn't cover a fraction of our rent and expenses, and that is strictly business based...did I mention I have 4 children, a mortgage, and regular bills on top of our business? What I'm at a loss for is the inconsistencies in the closures. Big box stores such as Costco,Walmart and the MALL are all open and packed on a regular basis, yet since our small business closure COVID cases have not declined. Alberta is basically crippling small businesses.. What I'm failing to understand is, why are small businesses that are keeping people fit, healthy both mentally and physically being punished with the closure? There is no evidence in Alberta currently that the contact tracing of Covid has been traced back to a martial arts school. Yet there ARE cases directly linked to malls, costco etc.. I am all for keeping our hospitals at a manageable capacity, but let's be real your small business closure isn't working. You should have done a hard shut down back in November. Now almost 2 months later, my family, my business is still suffering. For 8 years we have put our blood, sweat and tears and heart into our business. It is all we know, everything we have worked for, and it's being arbitrarily ripped out from under us. Have you had to reassure your kids that there would be presents under the tree? That they could see their friends and family again one day, and then in the same breath explain why it was ok for government officials to see theirs? Have you ever watched your partner sob, and tell you they are contemplating suicide? We aren't just a business.. we are a family. We are suffering...and we aren't the only ones. Sincerely, Christa Lubianesky
